NHR using uk plated cars
Hi. We are hoping to go for NHR in Portugal next year, so we are legal for the time we spend there. We currently swap over our two uk plated cars not exceeding 183 out of the uk, so they are legal. Can we continue to drive our uk plated cars once we take up NHR? We don't want to import. We are happy to swap them over twice a year. They would be taxed, MOT'd and insured in uk.

In order to qualify for NHR, you must become resident in Portugal (having not been tax resident in any of the preceding 5 years ).
If you are resident in Portugal, you may not drive a foreign-plated vehicle (except under the circumstance that you or your spouse are in the process of registering it as a PT vehicle and some other circumstances which presumably don't apply to you).
The minimum fine for driving a foreign-plated vehicle while resident is €250

The term NHR is a bit of a misnomer in that it can be interpreted in so many different ways. They probably could have come up with a better term. It's basically an inducement for people to become tax resident in Portugal. Try and think of it the same way you think of a company offering up special deals to new customers, in order to get them to sign a contract.
To apply to be tax resident as part of NHR, you can't have been resident in Portugal for the previous 5 years because ultimately, they don't need to offer you an inducement to pay tax - you have little option. NHR also differs in that you don't have to fullfill the usual tax residency requirements in terms of time spent in Portugal. Ultimately NHR llows you to pay lower levels of tax for period of 10 years. Pension income and foreign sourced will not be taxed BUT tax from capital gains on shares or the sale of securities or Portuguese sourced income will be taxed.
The above is a simplistic explanation.
