Re: The Portugal Saloon
The friends ask why I am not on FaceBook.. (need they ask)
Well I loath it frankly. lots of self congratulatory nonsense.. look at me pics...Arn't I fabulous holiday snaps.. and no actual interest in people .Technically I am still on the damn thing(joined at the start).because you can't actually ever close it down.despite my best efforts I hate that the US government has access to it..(Zukerman sold them the rights ) I hate that it 'owns' your photos ,and I particularly hate that it has roped in every area of media so that you are being forced to use it.---Otherwise I'm not bothered.lol.

I'm not a massive fan of Facebook. But it is handy for me to look at family photos as I don't live near to any of them.
My Mother never posts a thing but I know she looks at peoples photos almost every evening.
Times change. I tend to email back and forth to my Dad but still always phone my Mum.

As Knoxy seems to have gone AWOL I thought I would revive the TPS with a question
Has emailing become a thing of the past ,like writing letters has?
I have noticed that less and less people are sending social emails. Office stuff yes.. but the letters from friends and family are becoming fewer and further between. The friends ask why I am not on FaceBook.. (need they ask)

So if you are not on FaceBook, you are effectively barred from many avenues of communication. (i.e. I wanted to strongly object to an article in the Huffington post purporting to come from the McCann's nanny! huh? when did they have one.? Her statements were wildly untrue .No no.. can't do that unless through FB
I don't do twitter either ,or any other moronic form of contact...
Telephone then? I have rather got out of the habit, but may be forced to go back to it... sighs heavily....

I wholeheartedly agree with GeniB here. I have not and will not join FaceAche. If I want someone to know my business or see photos, I will e-mail them, and rightly or wrongly I expect the same courtesy in return. I do not like being told to 'go look on FaceBook'.
That's my little rant over.

What REALLY annoys me are those commercial organizations who now expect contact by Facebook and offer little or no other means of contact.

According to this you can delete your account...

Things do move on..of course..but is this in a good way? I felt quite sorry for your mum..looking at photos ..but with no actual contact. How sad for her. That was my point.. Is it just the information we want.?. The 'nosiness of being in the know'? lol Are we losing interest in the more intimate letter.the personal email?

Rant all you like - I'll join you. I don't trust most of the "soshul meeja" because there's no altruism out there, they are looking to make money...... so anything that's "free" is getting its money elsewhere, by advertising, by selling contacts, etc., etc. ..... and when it has built itself to a level of membership like Facebook, there will be many other ways of monetising all that "free" access. Plus, like you, I prefer to be selective and retain some control over my data.
What REALLY annoys me are those commercial organizations who now expect contact by Facebook and offer little or no other means of contact.

That was my second point too macliam.. This insidious creeping misuse of these so called 'free' sites. FB is not free .Your data has been sold to the Government (and god knows who else has access) You do not own anything you put up there..You cannot contact them directly. you cannot remove yourself (despite the blurb) Their power is such now that as I said they are denying you access to other sites without their permission. You know I think 1984 has arrived We are actually becoming mindless machines...

Facebook works well by demolishing privacy. That's why it overtook the competition and became the dominant social media platform.
They strive to make as much of your info as visible as possible. Every now and then they update the program and all accounts reset to default; all privacy settings fully open.
It's a connection machine. I don't use it much, there is no need to put pictures up or discuss your last night out. But I found old friends I'd lost track of decades ago.
Everyone's so busy trying to dodge spam and scams that email addresses are secret now. Facebook, with it's disregard for safety and privacy, cuts through and lets you be found.
If you don't want that, better not have a facebook account.
I use email for social messages, and even the phone sometimes.
Video skype [when it works] adds a surprising dimension, it's really worth the bother if you want to keep an emotional connection with people far away.

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

You do wonder where this country boy got all this from? walking by the river Orwell ? (from whence he took his pseudonym) His background was so peaceful and rural no wonder he found the conditions in Wigan a stark contrast. They weren't all that bad really,(also semi rural) and a very small town in those days . He was rather taken in by the local 'joke' about wigan having a pier as well. In retrospect he does sound a very depressed man
"For sun-bronzed scholars tune their thought
To Telepathic Station 9
From which they know just what they ought:
The useful sciences; the arts
Of telesalesmanship and Spanish
As registered in Western parts;
Mental cremation that shall banish
Relics, philosophies and colds --
Manana-minded ten-year-olds."
His wife died at 39, he developed TB and died at 46. It's unbelievable how much he packed into such a short life...... but his pen name as one of the greatest English writers of modern times is without mention on his gravestone, which gives only his real name and dates of birth and death.

Slightly different info to you Macliam
Eric Blair certainly was born in India,-.However he moved with his mother and sister to Henley -on-Thames when he was only one yr old...He lived most of his young and formative yrs in the area.Going to boarding school in Henley -on -thames after the family had moved to Shiplake.
He was very familiar with the countryside and the river Orwell.. from which he took his pen name, His family in his Great Grandfathers time were rich and married into the aristocracy.. He described his family in later times as 'lower upper middle class' as their fortunes dwindled.
