NHR application - typical cost?

Can anyone share information on how much it costs (typically) for an NHR application for husband and wife? NHR application fees, cost of local specialist, etc?
Many thanks for any info.

As far as I know, there are only 2 of us here on this forum that has applied for NHR. I don't know the cost yet but I sent the application drafted by my accountant to Lisbon and have a wait of up to 6 months.
I would say the biggest cost would be the filing of the tax by the accountant.

i have also applied and like Ukram says i think the only cost is for my accountant to fill in the final paperwork. So it is all a waiting game now to see if we are accepted. i don't know on what basis they would refuse the application though so we'll just keep our fingers crossed.

Re: NHR application - typical cost?

Depending on who you ask, it can cost between €5000 and €200 per person for a married couple. I got quotes from the larger firms (DeLoitte, KPMG and others) as well as some smaller. I paid €200 each for the applications and I pay €150 for our yearly combined tax return.
Having seen the application ( two sheets of paper with a few lines on each; one the application and the other the declaration, stating that the applicant hasn't been a tax resident in Portugal for five years prior) I am quite shocked by the fees some of the larger accounting firms are asking. I guess they get away with it in light of the hundreds of thousands of euros that can be saved by a ten years tax holiday. In one case I know of, a couple was quoted €21.000 to have their application done...
For us there were no questions asked. Nothing about how we lived (renting at the time of the application), our income or our assets.
We got our NHR status 2013. After our tax return was lodged last year, we got a statement from Finanças saying that we had €0 to pay in tax on our incomes.
So, at least in our case, the scheme seems to work.

Thanks Algarve5!
That's very helpful and confirms what I suspected (that the charges vary wildly depending on who does it, rather than the amount of work involved). We will probably be applying later this year (don't have an address in Portugal yet). Glad to hear that it worked for you and that the process seems straightforward.
Best regards,

Hi Algrarve 5, I too am looking for a reasonable quote, having got some pretty outrageous figures so far, can you tell me who you actually used for the application in the end please as your numbers, quoted below, look good! many thanks...

Tony is a CA and an active member of this forum. He and his wife run a small accounting business and if you have a printer/copier, you will probably get the application sent off to IRS within hours.

Is Tony the chap used by Algarve 5 as mentioned above then?
Many thanks for the reply by the way!...

Re: NHR application - typical cost?

Algarve5 has not replied and I cannot reply for him. I have recommended some members to use Tony and they have but I have not seen any feedback yet.
I can assure you that Tony does not know who I am here but I recommend him as he is well versed with the NHR system, cross border exchange control and speaks fluent English.
You can go to large CA firms and pay their overheads if you want and get the same service as Tony can give you. He did after all work for them for many years.
