Default meths and cycling

Greetings ex pats - I'm going on a cycling holiday in portugal - well its the start of a 3-4 month trip ending in North cape Norway and i have 2 questions I'd like help with :
1) How easy is it to buy meths in portugal - its for my stove ! and what is it called ?
2) I intend cycling from Faro to cape st Vincent along the N125 - would you advise this ? I've had some bad reports about the road.
Thanks Nigel

You could do it along the 125 but it's dangerous and not much fun at all. Google "ecovia Algarve" - there's a cycle path along the whole width of the Algarve.

PS. You can get meths in the Jumbo supermarket in Faro but I can't offhand remember what it's called in Portuguese.

Methylated Spirits is denatured and coloured ethenol alcohol, its like that in the UK so that British people are put off drinking it ! Here in Portugal you can buy bottles of Alcohol (spelt Alcool in Portuguese). Which is clear and un-dyed. Any chemist or supermarket has it in 200ml bottles for about 60p. Should be fine in your stove and to keep the chill out during the colder winter nights The meths they do sell here is probably best reserved for cleaning paint brushes and would not burn cleanly. Good luck with your trip

Have you permission to put that e mail out to the general public, only saying because you should never publish anyones e mail addy without permission, especially on a public site like this as it will always attract the spambots, even using caps might well not escape them.

Is that dangerous because folk might try to use aguardente in their stove or would they squeeze lime juice into their alcool.

Oh thanks for that Mr. Bife. I was under the false impression of it being methanol

@NewinTavira, I don´t know, I quite like the N125 between Luz and Fuzeta. Haven´t tried it all the way to Faro or Tavira )

Much of the cycle path markd in blue paint is the N125.

I've done VRS Antonio to Faro on the 125. It was not as bad as people make out. Also if you are on a decent road bike, which I expect you will be looking at the distance you want to do, some of the ecovia would not be suitable for a road bike, more suitable for something with fatter tyres.

It is methanol which in Portuguese is álcool desnaturado, (I googled that).
