Meo Wifi internet advice needed
Hi All
I have had constant problems over the years with my internet speed.
Today Meo called with an offer that would give me wifi internet instead of Internet down the phone line.
My question that I need help with is has anybody on the Forum got this system from Meo and what kind of Internet speeds do you get.
Thanks
Peter

Contact my buddy Chris at feliztech.com & he'll probably be able to advise you.

We have it - only because we don't have a phone line to the house.
45G is normal, but we can have "moments"
Winter us normally worse than summer and although we had thick fog this week, no problems. Then again, we have high winds and it disappears

It's not WiFi its 4G Data and it's quite easy to test the likely speed because it will depend on the signal strength from your nearest MEO (PT) antenna. If you or a friend visit the location in your house where you are going to put the router and use a MEO phone then it will show you the signal strength (normally five little bars for full signal but less is lower).
Have been on 4G Data for several years where I live with no hiccups - speed is normally 55 mbps or so which is pretty good and plenty for me.
IMPORTANT Two Things : Make you you have a package with unlimited monthly data as some of them lock you out after 100gb has been used in the month. That's about 100 hours of HD TV/Movie streaming in a month
If it doesn't work as you expect make sure you complain officially within 14 days of signing the contract. That's your cooling off period and after that time you will be locked in to a contract for two years

I think you'll find that all 3/4G even unlimited are now throttled after you've used a certain amount & remember the Meo people who call & offer you deals are paid on commission & will always promise the world

I've done installation of the NOS equivalent for a couple of clients.
One very important thing is to check out the 4G reception in you house prior to purchase.
If your walls are thick or your house is situated in a "signal" shadow it will not work.
One needs a clear unencumbered DIRECT line off site to the antenna.
Best test the 4G signal strength first!

When contacting Meo, use a burner phone.
I'm serious; they give out your contact number to their sales contractors, and you get daily sales calls in perpetuity, even if you've already bought their service.
Nothing will stop them; registration on the national 'no call' list just seems to spur them on.
I've cut the ringer on my fixed line phone so I can no longer receive calls.

My MEO ADSL speed has dropped to point where it's almost unuseable as well as expensive - not surprising as their local switch is rated at 6mbps. Feliztech advised Vodafone for mobile internet if fibre isn't available as you can buy daily unlimited access to overcome the capping..... at €1 a day this would still work out cheaper than what I'm paying MEO for their joke of a service at present.

As an option their PAYG tariff, Vodafone Go looks reasonable as you can load from €10 for 5 days, €15 for 15 days and so on upwards. It sounds incongruous but for every load you get 30 gb no matter what value of load. So the maximum you could get would be 180 gb for €60 or another option would be 60gb for €30 and others in between. If you didn’t want a contract it could be an option but you’ll need to remember to top up in a timely manner.

They will get your number regardless. Just a matter of time.

I'd put up with 3 times a month; we get calls daily unless we keep the phone disconnected.

I have the M40 package; mobile with old landline number, 2 mobiles, 3/4G modem and satellite TV.
Pricewise it is cheaper than when I had landline(phone and internet) and 2 mobiles.
Proximity and line of sight to the nearest mast are important, as is positioning of the modem.
I don't have direct line of sight but by mounting the modem at the highest point possible and adding a proper external antenna I get stable speeds of 20Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload with low latency. I must add that this is 3G. If I select 4G the results are awful.
Wireless comms are the way forward. PT may cable towns but rural fibre is unlikely. More masts are cheaper.
Also 5G is not that far off

Fullband MIMORAD. It is an omnidirectional antenna which is ideal as I don't have direct line of sight and rely on reflected radio waves.
The problem with antennas is the wiring. What reception gains you may get can be lost in cabling to the modem. Ultra low loss cables are best but even then you will suffer a loss.
Antenna is connected to a standard MEO Huawei B310 with 5 meters of ultra low loss cables.
Without antenna: Ping 63 Download 12.45 Mbps Upload 1.04 Mbps.
With antenna: Ping 34 Download 20.91 Mbps Upload 4.36Mbps.
(I should add these figures were obtained on my PC which is connected to the router via powerline adapters so there is a further loss)
Not earth shattering improvement but without antenna the connection is unstable and speeds vary wildly. With antenna reception is much more stable and consistent.
Hope this helps.

Re: Meo Wifi internet advice needed
I've been on the NOS 4G 20MB service for some years now. I'm currently getting 3-4 bars signal strength and 19MB download speed on my Huawei B593 router (which I bought separately via eBay, along with the optional "rabbit ears" internal antennas).
Performance does drop in the summer when all our visitors connect their iThings etc. and do their best to bring the network to its knees. And (occasionally) in really bad weather. But overall performance has got slightly better over the last couple of years.
NOS absolutely will choke you if you you use too much bandwidth - my speed dropped to 2-3MB a few months ago so I complained via their website. They did call me and confirmed that I had exceeded their "fair use" limits, although they wouldn't tell me what that was nor how much I'd actually used. I had been streaming a lot of catch-up TV and films in HD.
I now pay just under 22 euros a month for this package (rolling 2 year contract).
