Has any body travelled from Lisbon to Faro/Travira by public transport? i will be travelling from Lisbon to tTavira in May. Just wondered what folk would choose between bus or train and which is more scenic.

I can only vouch for the train, which is a very pleasant journey.
If you decide on that, book well in advance (or if over 65, get a "senior" ticket) for a good discount. You can get the train from either Oriente or Entrecampos stations in Lisbon.

You can get a bus from Lisbon airport to Tavira centre. My sister-in-law prefers this to the train journey especially if you have luggage.

Does the over 65 discount apply to British residents . Do you need to show your passport or driving license if so

If you use the train you need to check the journey times. They range from about 3 hours to 5 depending on the service you get.
You can get a train from Faro to Villareal as well but I do not know where the nearest station to Tavira is
The train is quite scenic, very rural once out of Lisbon and along the coast from Albufeira

Yes - it's available to everybody, resident or visitor. Photo id is required - I'm pretty sure it's still exclusively a UK passport that is acceptable for UK citizens unless resident here, in which case a permanent resident card will do the trick.

Re: Lisbon to Faro
My parents (not resident) show their UK driving licence photocards to get the senior discount. Whether this is strictly acceptable, I don't know, but works for them.

Re: Lisbon to Faro
You're welcome.
You can buy the tickets with discount in advance over the internet - just select "senior citizen" in the drop-down discount box. Remember to have the passport to hand when travelling, though - the ticket inspector will ask for it.
The discounts are available on shorter, non-reservable journeys, too.

Lisbon to the Algarve (Faro or Tavira) is fairly straightforward - have a look at the website below for options from there
Travel options between the Algarve and Spain by bus or train
It has been updated for 2018

The train doesn't always stop at Porto Nova though.

Just taken the train from the Orients to Tunes.. where we were picked up by the excellent VIP taxi service (going to Luz)...
The only comments I would add is that if you have more than one piece of luggage, and aren't either young or strong , it can be a bit of a struggle .. Very steep steps up to the train ,very few and small.floor compartments to take a suitcase.. or you have to heave them up onto racks.. As you are given numbered seats you may be placed far away from your luggage...maybe not ideal in summer months.with lots of tourists where you can't keep an eye on them.Another struggle to manoeuvre them off the train (we had three) with people trying to get off and on at the same time..
Would also suggest you look for the 'elavadprs ' lifts at the stations to go up and down with heavy luggage.. not always obvious.. Circular silver and glass objects.not marked .
Otherwise a very comfortable journey .Alfa pendalo being the fast non stop train
