Default Insuring UK registered car until matriculation for PT

Asking for my uncle. He is in the process of moving to Portugal. He has had an apartment here for 10 years, but is now in the process of becoming resident here. He is bringing his car with him, and we're aware of the steps required in this respect.

The car is presently UK registered. But he needs to be resident here in order to bring the car in, but his UK car insurance depends on him being a UK resident.

How should the insurance be handled for this? Ideally, he needs some kind of insurance to cover the car *after* he is legally resident in Portugal, but before the car is matriculated here and hence on PT plates. Can anyone recommend how to handle this?

contact his insurer and find out how long they'll cover for him abroad if its not long enough find another insurer who will cover him for as long as it will take , most will give you about 90 days without extra costs involved

Normally he would be entitled to foreign coverage as long as the insurer is informed of the countries the car will be travelling through.

I would worry that the "home" address that the insurance company has on their records is no longer your home address so if there was a problem they could say you hadn't given them correct information -
unless of course you told them you didn't have an actual home address in UK in which case I wonder if they will in fact insure you at all? After all their premiums are calculated based on this?

I understood that a Portuguese insurance company can insure a foreign car, so long as the matriculation process has begun. Is it 100% necessary to have registered residency prior to commencement of matriculation?

Quite correct although the premium is significantly higher for a foreign registered car.

I think I was being charged about €80 (ish) per month for mine........ but it does have a very big engine.
