As well as what Loafing Along sais, if you have income on which you pay tax in Portugal, you can reduce the final bill with a range of deductable expenses for which your NIF must appear on the receipt.
General expenditure is one of them - 35% of any expenditure which doesn't fall into the other categories, to a limit of 250€ (which represents expenditure of around 720€ in terms of how much expenditure gives this benefit), hence Continente asking if you want a receipt with NIF.
