1 cubic metre = 1.89 kgs of LPG and 1 kg of LPG = 13.6 kWh approx.

Therefore 1 cubic metre = 25.7 kWh, which costs 5€, or 0,20€ per kWh - approximately the same as electricity.

More expensive than mains natural gas in the UK but perhaps not quite as bad as you first thought?

Probably shipped in by gas tankers or via a pipeline from Morocco to Spain.

Exactly (and the mains network in Portugal isn't only "up north". It just excludes the Algarve (or bottom ) for the time being. The north starts where the centre finishes - at about Aveiro).

Here's a map of the existing network.

But you are comparing apples with pears, lpg is about 3 times the calorific value of natural gas, 3 times more bang per buck. The actual gas in lpg is a mix, they manage its calorific value.

Comparison between LPG & Natural Gas | Propane | Butane | Methane | LNG | CNG - ELGAS - LPG Gas for Home & Business

If Portugal had a nationwide natural gas system a lot more people could afford to heat their homes but I guess that will never happen.
They started putting a pipe system in place years ago around the Alcobaça area to service some off the Ceramic Factories , & then it all stooped ???

A new house was built up the hill behind my place, it's serviced by a dirt road ,& how they got permission for it is any ones guess

But ,They had too by Law have a Gas Meter built into the boundary wall & a special gas pipe inside a another pipe to protect it that ended up where a boiler could / would be situated inside the house.

Fact :- this house is just under a kilometre from a tarmac road & as there is no obvious plan in sight to bring mains Gas even to the nearest village, its obvious this is just another useless expense !

+ They also by Law had to have 2 PT Telephone jack's in each & every room ,except the bathrooms, this cost them 540.00.
The wireless coverage in this area is second to none !!!!
Draw your own conclusions
