Another Sunday & sadly another record = 268 Active today
+ during today's lunch time news on RTP1, the following statement was on the banner line

"62 Fogo's deflagar entre meia-noite & amanhecer"
62 Fires flared up between midnight & dawn !

There is a very interesting article in this weeks edition off the Alcoa , which is Alcobaça's Local Paper.

It is reported that there has been a outbreak off +/- 11 Fires in the Bica & Castanheria area's & a spokesman for Alcobaça Camará stated that they knew 2 people where responsible but could not identify them.
So some how, they borrowed 3 Soldier's to patrol the area & since they have been in place no more fire's have broken out !

The GNR caught a man "red handed" starting a fire in the Cascais area last weekend , he tried to make a run for it ,but as he was 83 he failed miserably.
So what did he do , pulled 230.00€'s out off his pocket & tried to bribe them.
He will be up in court on several charges

But a important point
The Civil Protection issued the following facts on Saturday Last
1% off Fires are caused by "natural events" ?

40% off Fires are caused by negligence ,i.e. people burning rubbish , cigarettes discarded, fireworks, barbecues & just plain bloody stupidity.

59% Arson !

But sadly over last week end a Helicopter Pilot lost his life when his machine hit some high tension cables ,he was married with 2 children

Hopefully there will be a lot less Fires now there's been some rain , but when the rain really starts another problem arises , because off the lack off ground cover in the areas off the fires, there are very high possibilities off mud slides & rubble all over the roads & in the water courses + the ashes & detritus get washed down into streams & rivers & the pollution factor goe's thru the roof !

This is a never ending circle here in PT & it's about time something concrete was done about it !!!!

Didn't they try some sort of flushing-programme with the watercourses a year or so ago - I seem to vaguely recall it was somewhere near ..... Tavira?

Possibly, but the biggest problem this year is lack off rain, most off the reservoirs are at the lowest levels for many years.

In this mornings Correio da Manha paper, there's a article about the possible / probable legal cases that could be issued against the GNR - Civil Protection & the company awarded the contract to clear the "bermas" sides off the roads of "encroaching vegetation", as is plainly seen in any photo published after this tragedy , this was never carried out !!!

The charges reported could be issued under the "Homicida negligência" Manslaughter Law

As "macliam" has pointed out quite rightly, the biggest problem here is the lack off enforcement off existing law's by those tasked to do so ,because they don't want too upset the population they live amongst.

Not usually something I'd usually apply to the GNR - more like idleness, "deixe lá" and/or local "connections". As in my place, 15km from the town, fire last year (and enforced attendance to give witness statement), lack of aceiros or cutback of estevas by neighbour noted, lack of any maintenance on property opposite noted..... absolutely nothing done, it has disappeared into a black hole.
