The march of the left sounds more like the " hokey kokey ".
You put your left policies and then you take them out !

Re: End of Democracy in Portugal ?
I have a Coffee jar with gravy browning inside.... labels aren't always accurate .
Let's see if a coalition of the broad Left can do anything for the country... the "united" Right have had their turn........
PS - for anyone who didn't get my comments about "O povo" earlier, I was echoing the Allende chant much used in 1974 "O povo, unido, jamais será vencido"
However, SWMBO has pointed me to a Brazilian version from 2013 which might be more appropriate for now -
"O povo unido não precisa de partido"

Re: End of Democracy in Portugal ?
Our so called "President" Cavaco Silva & PM Pedro Coelho have been interrupted while giving speech's several times in the last couple off years, by the crowd who started singing this song.
p.s. neither off them joined in ???

Grândola, Vila Morena -THE sound of the Carnation revolution ...... days of hope in times gone by.
Strange that those two should ignore what has become an anthem of liberty in Portugal..... but then again, "O Algarveu", as Prime Minister, denied Salgueiro Maia, the hero of 25 Abril, a special "blood" pension (pensão de preço de sangue) but granted it to 2 ex-PIDE inspectors.......
Viva o MFA, Viva Abril, Viva Portugal!

How can you post on a thread about DEMOCRACY??
Considering that you on many threads on this forum insist that you are the only person that understands any subject whatsoever and anyone who offers a different interpretation is a numbskull or similar derogative description, or any publication not agreeing with your ideas is a reincarnation of The Daily Satan Times

Different opinions are what free speech is all about and we all know how you react to anyone wbo does not hold your opinions.

There used to be some very striking murals in Alcântara, which you could see from the #15 tram on the way between Praça do Comercio and Belém. I think they were restored as a 40th anniversary tribute but I haven't been that way since.

Re: End of Democracy in Portugal ?
You've been gorging yourself on economic porn for so long that you've become accustomed to the instant gratification of cuts, sackings and tax rises. The dominatrix TINA. That kind of demolition is quick, easy, brutal - restoration is a more delicate art, taking time, dedication and skill. Less of the Wham Bam and more of an enduring relationship.
But actually, I have told you precisely where the average Portuguese worker's lot will be improved. And you read it and marked it up as socialist idealism (so that's good for the workers, isn't it?). But just in case you skimmed through my post without taking due care and attention in your haste to get your response in, here are two of the most important measures for them in terms of immediate impact on their pay packets
And as the significance of those has obviously passed you by, I'll expand a little. The surtax is paid by anyone who has a post-deductions income above the national minimum wage. The PSD - CDS/PP coalition are using some formula based on economic performance in order to return (or not) the surtax bit by bit. The Socialists will guarantee to return it in full by 2017. The proposed extra steps in the IRS scales will reduce the amount of income tax paid (if you recall the alterations to the scales in 2013 reduced the number of steps from 8 to 5, leading to an increase in tax payable for most), with the stated aim of reversing the "fiscal asphyxiation of the middle classes". That, by the way, to take effect for next year.
We won't know exactly what's in store in detail until the revised programme is released - it's due to be presented to the PS this evening and I presume it will be released for general consumption after the debate on the outgoing government's programme is concluded and the record-breaking 4 votes of rejection (PS, BE, PCP and PEV have all announced they will be proposing separate motions) have been held. But those measures (and most of the rest of what I posted earlier) are definitely in it, confirmed in an excellent interview with António Costa broadcast by SIC last night.
