I've often seen it claimed on the forums & Facebook groups that dashcams are illegal in Portugal & today had a conversation with a Portuguese friend who happens to be a highish ranking GNR officer who tells me that the claim is untrue & dashcams are perfectly legal here.

I am sure he is right and the actual device itself is not illegal to own but I have heard it claimed that CCTV recordings that include images of members of the public; where that person has not given specific permission to be photographed, are illegal. If you research the idea of putting a CCTV security camera on your own house then there is an inevitable 'licence' to buy and you have to ensure that the device is not placed where it can see/record images from places that have public access. We have situations in the Algarve where well meaning developers have installed security cameras within resorts only to be told they need to be deactivated.

I seem to remember there was a similar law in place in the UK a few years ago that had to be repealed (quietly) so they could plaster every UK shopping centre and every street corner with CCTV cameras. I suspect the same situation here.

It would be interesting to hear from a lawyer whether dash-cam evidence is acceptable in a Portuguese court.

ANPR is a different set of rules and that is fitted now to some of the more upmarket vehicles operated by the Traffic Cops

If anything the standard off driving here in PT it getting worse year by year , the above examples are common mistakes you witness every day.
The only Police Action shown at all ,is some body getting a "ticket" for Parking !!!
