CAR moving from Spain to PORTUGAL?
hello all.
we are to move to Central Portugal in the next 3 and a half weeks
having almost completed a purchase of a house.
and we'd would like some advice on bringing our Spanish car
its 7 year old but we only bought it 2 months ago, have insured it at the same time (ABBEYGATE) and are wondering what the position is
regarding driving it around when we settle, or should we swap it for a Portuguese one quickly?
we're totally ignorant of the situation and here's a good place to start.
any advoce would be most welcome
it is a Spanish Plated ESCORT

Re: CAR moving from Spain to PORTUGAL?
Paul,
We are in the same position as you.
We have a Spanish registered and insured Fiesta, six years old but not many kilometres on the clock and I wonder if we should try and sell in Menorca where it is at present or bring it to PT. Don't know what the complications might be, to go through matriculation in PT
Any advice from Expats would be most welcome.

HI THERE
MAYBE WE'LL BOTH GET SOME HELP
WE WERE TOLD WHEN WE WERE THERE THAT
WE WOULD NOT GET A GREAT DEAL ON TRADE IN
AND THAT INSURANCE COULD BE AS MUCH AS 3 TIMES THE PT RATE
FOR A SPAINISH CAR.
WE SHALL SEE WHAT COMES UP
GOOD LUCK WITH THE MOVE WHERE ARE YOU OFF TO?

We will be near Ourique, about an hour from Faro. How about yourself?
We will be over to sign contracts early in June and once the dust has settled, look at the car situation then. In between, I'll see what I can find out and let you know what I found out if anything.
Cheers,

HI AGAIN
I SEE YOU REPLIED ON ANOTHER THREAD I WAS ON TOO ABOUT
SPAIN AGAINST PORTUGAL..
WE WILL BE LIVING IN MIRANDA DO CORVO (QUITE A BIT NORTH OF YOU) JUST AWAITING OUR MORTGAGE OFFER LETTER WHICH WE HEAR LEFT THE ALGARVE 2 DAYS AGO
HOPING TO MOVE IN ON 17TH JUNE (ISH)
WE WILL BE THERE PERMANENTLY,
SPENT YEARS LEARNING TO SPEAK SPANISH WELL AND NOW PORTUGUESE
SOUNDS LIKE RUSSIAN, ALTHOUGH WE'LL BE ABLE TO READ AS IS LOOKS SIMILAR (LATIN BASED)
JUST BOUGHT A COURSE TO STUDY INDOORS, STILL TRYING TO GET USED TO
4 OR 5 WAYS TO PRONOUNCE THE LETTER "S" NOT LIKE SPANISH WHERE THERE'S ONLY ONE.
ANYWAY
HERE'S TO A HAPPY MOVE

Re: CAR moving from Spain to PORTUGAL?
The same rules appliy to Spanish registered vehicles as UK registered vehicles.
You can insure them annually.
You can MOT them annually.
But..
They should be imported after 181 days.
You cannot tax them in Spain with a Portuguese MOT.(Not 100% but pretty certain)
If you were to tax it here (I think you can once) then GNR know that it has probably been here too long.

That's very disappointing. Why are things so difficult, it's fairly easy in Espana?
Cars are expensive in PT, so it must have been a real pain for you to return your UK car back to Britain and buy in PT.
I'll certainly PM Ged if he doesn't appear on this thread.

Just when I thought I'd got it all sorted out someone had to go and throw a spanner in the works. I found I could buy the car I want from a LHD specialist in UK much cheaper than in PT so thought I do just that. Now I'm not so sure. Oh, well back to the drawing board.
