I have read that the new Astra sat will be launched in May, this should mean that there will not be any significant UK channel loss in the south of Portugal for a good part of the summer.

A tv satellite launch blew up in Russia yesterday, hope it was this one! Trevortronix says on his site that he has an IRD box which will solve the problem. Any truth in this?

I think that we are going to see a lot of " solutions " being sold.
The general opinion is DO NOT part with a penny/euro cent until the new sat is operating and we finally find out what can or cannot be received.
That will not be until next summer.

Indeed it has over the last week or so, with channels from 2a and 2b moving to 2f and 1n (and some 2bs to 2a!)
This has resulted in a loss of some channels in some extreme fringe reception areas like the Canaries, as the 1n or 2f european beam simply does not cover them
The only thing confirmed is that it will launch "Q2 2013".
As pre BBC blog, you can expect the chanensl on 1N (BBC ITV C4) to move to 2E uk beam sometime after it is launched, tested, positioned...as they blog says "mid 2013".
What reception will be like depends on the UK beam on 2E, and if it is similar to that of 2Fs Uk beam, that carries Channel Five

Yes but they were all SKY free to air channels such as Pick and some HD channels. The best guide for UK copyright channels is the earlier move of channel 5 and 4 HD which seems to not be obtained down here on a normal sized dish. It also hints that if you want a good number of English language channels they could well be SKY HD channels on their premium packages. Their terms and conditions forbid reception outside UK and Eire but if they must allow overspill it might as well be at a high price to the lucky punters.
