Re: Royal Cayman Islands Police and St Helena Police
Hello Gents hows it going
I tell you what my mind is all over the place when it comes to making a firm decision with RCIPS.
The previous forums created on this site were dated around 2006/7 and they were mostly negative, i thought that things might of improved over the last 3 years, obviously not.
HOWEVER, i have submitted an application for a constable role and im just going to see what sort of response ill get (If any at all)
Ive been with a force for 6 years now and i am no longer happy in what i currently do. I am also losing the plot with the UK very rapidly and i want to get out asap. Prior to joining the police i lived overseas and have experience in that respect.
Whilst serving over the years i have been looking into all other options, ie NZ, Oz, Bermuda, and i have done some extensive research, i must of gone over the posts a thousand times on this forum just get a reasonable insight.
SUN DRIED i would love it if you could let me know alittle more about what its really like over there, im going as a 26 year old singleton with no commitments, is there anything i should really consider and how many people do you think their recruiting for?
BERMUDA BOUND ive been reading you posts for along time over the years and have seen some great comments from you, did you ever hear anything back regarding Bermuda? This ideally is the place id love to go, but every time i email Sgt Miller she tells me that they are not going to be recruiting for the forseeable.
& MHFOSTER, good to see you on here buddy, i take it that they never got back to you about Bermuda either, ive got the link for you matey, youve got till Friday the 14th of May to get your application in though.

Ello ello, thats great news Daisy!
i tried to ring you the other day from work if you didnt recognise the number, just wanted to see if you got it in ok.
Did you get an email confirming they received it? She said that it would be 1-3 weeks before people knew if they were successful for an interview or not.

I was away at conference all week, so I wasn't able to answer it for the most part.

Steve, was just wondering what happened with the Canadian application? Is working with RCIP seriously better than the UK and Canada? I cannot believe that. Having returned to the UK, my Cayman service was a definite negative in the application process. Did you find the same with Canada?

Very interesting to read all your blogs and certainly food for thought however I have applied for various positions in the latest vacancy campaign. I need a change and the sun is appealing. Will make decisison if offered an interview as don't know enough info. If successful I would be going with a young family so safety is important for my wife and children, not too worried about myself as it can't get any more dangerous than where I am now.
Most of blogs seem to refer to the role of a Patrol Constable position but vacancies advertised also include Marine/Dog section, Detective and SIO positions.
Any comments on the other positions' particularly as a Detective as the pay seems better but what are the hours like?
Marine section sounds too good to be true, what is the reality of getting a full time position with the Unit?

please don't be fooled by all the diverse pitter patter about different roles and jobs on offer.
The truth is you'll be in uniform doing any hour that suits them, dealing with 90% domestic disputes, 5% traffic violations and 5% landlord/tennant disputes.
I had 8 years CID before I came here, to which they assured me my skills would be used in a similar position once I'm over there. Mistake No.1 was believing them.
The 'specialist roles' as for the local officers only. Despite what is on offer, despite what they may say in interview. It's how they keep local officers on-side otherwise they'd leave and get jobs in the private sector.
Between you me and the gatepost, it's why they've had to do another recriuting campaign this year (This is their 2nd) The first one they made the mistake of telling officers they'd be in uniform with a possibility of moving into specialist roles. And guess what? A number of people withdrew.
Now they've got a different tact where you'll probably be assured you'll get a plumb posting in the Marine unit sailing up and down 7 mile beach all day, or a job as a 'spotter' on the new Helicopter we have.
Trust me there is a long line of local officers been promised these positions long ago, and the chances are you're comming to replace them in their old uniform patrol positions.
I put in for the Drugs Task Force about a year ago and am still waiting.... not that it matters to me cos on June 18th I'll be outta here

To all you prospective recruits, you should know that your skills / previous experience will count for nothing. This is not in anyway a 'career enhancing' move. The specialist posts and that includes Traffic and CID go to locals. Copout is absolutely right. You will be there to make up the uniform patrol numbers so the locals can move into the specialist depts regardless of their skills. A large portion of your duties will include looking after prisoners in a truly disgusting lock up (I shudder just thinking of it), the rest of the time you'll be doing all the work. The locals carry the uniform until they get that specialist job they are owed because they are Caymanian. There are no training opportunities, overseas or local offered to non Caymanians. The money will not be spent on people on 2 year overseas contracts, why spend it when you'll leave probably after 2 years? At most you can stay there for 7 years because of the immigration policy.
And another thing - Daisy - I'm assuming you are female, if you are you should know that because of that you will be at the very bottom of the pile.
Sorry to put a downer on all your dreams of life in the sun (like I had) but it is better that you all know the reality of what you are letting yourself in for!!

Clearly everyone seems to be having a different experience.
It's very easy to become over critical of the RCIP- it's not UK policing and never will be, but for me it has a lot to offer if you have the right attitude.
The grass really isn't greener back in the UK - not these days
