philippines is a very dangerous place, why do you think so many locals bugger off to other countries, i mean who in their right mind would come to the uk to work in the NHS!!¬!

Only some areas of mindanao that are populated by muslims are unsafe. The rest of the country is relatively peaceful. The reason why Pinoys emigrate is to escape the poverty in the Philippines. Three quarters of the population live below the poverty line. Its not because its an unsafe country.

TURKO-STEVE is spot on with his analysis. The "poverty" or subsistence living will never change. The ruling classes (ie politicians) will make sure that their positions can never be threatened by a rising middle class. It's all very feudal. You have the rich and you have the poor; rather like UK 200 years ago. And of course the corruption is endemic. Current labour rates (if you are lucky enough to actually find work) vary between GBP 3.50 and GBP6.50 [COLOR="black"]per day depending on whether the employer considers you skilled or unskilled. Nobody is likely to get rich on these terms.
