Manila is a great but cheap place to stay. I can see Americans and British nationals staying in Manila for good. People are hospitable and kind and food is great.

Is Manila really that good? For a new retired brit coming to live in the Philippines is it worth staying there for a few months prior to going for a quiet life in say, Luzon?

It depends on what your looking for personally, after 4 months here ,you get a bit fed up with ,the traffic, pollution, going anywere else takes for ever because of the latter. If you like going to shopping centres your like it..!!
I have just come back from Baguio way , to find just as much traffic. I would recommend coming here for a few months ,but the islands are where i think its better, beaches, not so much hassle, few more friendly faces, thats just my view,i am sure the site will be bombarded with other views... If you have not been before the poverty might shock you at first?!!! the taxi drivers will shock you for sure!!

Have not been to Manila for about six years, jus wonder if it has changed much. I got really annoyed with the rip-off taxi's from the airport (even some of the customs guys are thieving swine if they can get their hands in your bag when one of their mates distracts you), the heat and pollution, and some kind of cartel between the hotels to keep prices artificially high.

I get the idea. I think I'll get the first long-distance bus heading anywhere north straight from Manila airport.

I second that! I also love the police who stop you when driving for minor problems which disappear on the production of money Manila is one of the low spots of the country for me, but once outside of it, life is great there and the people have a good attitude to life.

Send me a line at <<email address removed>>. British or American or whatever it dont matter, haven't really been out too much lately cause i've been working at one of the call centers here but I finally quit.

Manilla is hard work with flooded streets and sidewalks when it rains , power outages and garbage...I live in Palawan which must have been Gods duplication of the Garden of Eden..its like living back in the 50's where folk were polite and kids are everyones responsibility and they call you Sir..but while its dirt cheap and poor here, its heaven for us guys although serious illness will require repat or trip expensive trip to manilla hospital centres.

Live on the Beach is well within even a pensioners reach
