Default Shipping desktop computer from UK to US

I am hoping to go to the US next summer for 3-5 years (J visa). However, I really need to take my computer with me (and probably a few other things) that I can't take in my usual luggage.

What is the best way of getting them form the UK to the US? We're talking the computer plus maybe 3 medium size boxes maximum. What are the procedures with taxation on these items?

Any help appreciated.

Hi there,

Most removal companies offer a shared load service, whereby you share a container with other people moving to the same country, so you only pay for the space in a container you take up, which is the best option if you've only a few bits to move but still want the protection of a professional moving company and packing due to the fragile nature. However, there can be minimum volumes so if you're a long way under the minimum then you might also want to compare the cost with specialist parcel shipping companies. Worth looking at both options.

Re taxes: Personal effects imported for your own use and owned by you do not attract duty or other taxes on arrival, providing you have owned them for a minimum of 12 months prior to departure so there shouldn't be any duty to pay. Your removal company will manage the customs process for you and help you fill in any paperwork necessary for duty free import.

Hope that helps? any other questions just holler

Kirsty

Sorry it's taken a while to reply. Thank you for your response. I'm so happy to hear there will not be any tax charges.

You say to try "specialist parcel shipping companies" - do you mean like UPS or FedEx, or something aimed at actual moving? Could you suggest a company?

I would do both - get a quote from an International Removal Company and then also from Parcel carriers - see what works out best for you.

And yep, someone like UPS/Fedex/DHL would offer a parcel service and there are some others out there (if you do a search on the forum for parcel shipping or excess baggage you'll get some recommendations from personal experience).
