Port of Wellington out of action after recent earthquake

One of New Zealand’s major shipping hubs, the Port of Wellington, will be out of action for up to six months as work continues to repair the damage sustained from a 7.8 magnitude earthquake last November.

Extensive damage caused by the Kaikoura earthquake on November 14th has affected the running of the port – with cracks and buckling visible on the ground, and two giant gantry cranes used for loading and unloading shipping containers now out of action.

All cargo coming into the port will now be diverted to Napier, with links back to Wellington via rail and road. Extra charges will be applied for this, and it should also be noted that delays are possible due to the higher than average volume of shipments now entering Napier.

Work to restore the cranes over the coming months will hopefully secure them should another earthquake strike the area again.

Shipments to New Plymouth will also be affected during this time.

If you are concerned about how this might affect your international removal to New Zealand please contact your move coordinator who will be able to provide you with up to date information and alternative plans.
