Oh! and another thing in QLD holidays are tied to shifts...
if you work only days 4 weeks plus BH's
if you work days and lates and bank holidays 5 weeks plus BH's
if you work days, lates and bank holidays plus nights 6 weeks plus BH's
plus the monthly RDO which is acrued time somehow.

Re: Nursing in Australia - Grades and Divisions [and jobs!]
Well, this is what I've discovered...
Victoria is different to other States in that you become a "Grade 2, Year 1" in your second year, and then become a "Grade 2, Year 2" etc. etc.
Other States it is as Justin says - 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.
That doesn't mean that Vic nurses get a huge pay rise in their second year, just that they have a different way of showing grading.
Each State has its own pay scale too, NSW with $811 per week: about $100 higher than WA [the next highest] , NT, QLD, VIC, Tassie, with poor old SA propping up the table with $635.
The differential varies year on year, State by State, too.
And I'm applying for Grade 3 jobs despite less than 3 years experience, and have already had a nibble from a prospective employer. I'll let you know how I go on. But don't set your sights too low, people!

Re: Nursing in Australia - Grades and Divisions [and jobs!]
Finally got a job! Sheesh, it's taken some time...
Bit of a dilemma on negotiating [or not] the details of my contract [and the pay is pretty similar to the rates I posted above, by the way].
My contract states that I'll be a 3rd year nurse, though I'll actually be in my 4th year of working very soon. My contract says that my next increment will be another year from starting! So I'll always have a lag of 10-11 months presumably?
Has anyone successfully negotiated a higher year/grade by arguing at the point that they've been qualified for X years, or anyone had the experience of just having to like it or lump it?
I don't want to make a plank of myself by trying to argue my case if it's ultimately going to be fruitless, but on the other hand the extra cash would be very handy as it's 2 grand a year before tax...
