We should all try and arrange a meet once we're settled, so we can share stories and stuff about moving/working in Perth....

Mind you, may be longer than I thought before we get our visa as I am still waiting (after 4 weeks) for my references from my ward sister

This is the only thing holding me up!

Hi All nurses going to perth, do you have to? I may not get a job ha, ha. Well as you guessed I'm also going to perth (RGN), hope to get a job in day surgery or operating theatre and also looking at the Joondalup area, my family and I i.e hubby and 2 girls have just lodged our application to the DIMIA, managed to get my skills successfully assessed by ANMC a few weeks ago and then lodged application.

Hi all,

Lilian is another nurse aiming for Perth. We went out last Christmas for January in Oz and felt that Perth was great (Went east to Sydney>Melbourne>Adelaide but Perth won.

Posted ANMC assessment June 23rd and received positive assessment in post on July 03rd (granted June 28).

Had formal job offer letter from Royal Perth arrive in post July 04th (following on from visit/interview while there) and we are about to post Visa application this weekend to DIMIA.

Not sure where to live yet, assuming all goes well, but favour north in easy commuting distance to the centre.

Biggest worry (apart from visa and meds) is the falling pound and rising house prices in Perth (approx 15-20% per year).

Would be good to meet up in Perth later on.

Good Luck to all,

Jon (and Lilian).

Hi Jon and Lillian, I feel it would be good if we could all meet up, perhaps even before we go, obviously depending on where people stay, but if not in Perth would be brill. I can understand how you feel about the rising house prices, I don't know if we would ever be in a position to buy there, the nurses pay doesn't look exactly great there either, but like most people that's not the point of going.

Have you defenately decided on RPH, have heard some ..........er bad reports........., but they also offered me a brill job, I will definately give it a try, as I quite like working in big hosps.

Hi there self and husband are hoping to go to Perth next year. We are just in the process of applying for skills assessments (Andy is ICU nurse) and we will apply for a visa in his name. I am a midwife, does anyone know - as we are applying for visa in his name but I want to register in WA also, do I also have to have skills assessment? I have looked at the WA site but came away none the wiser. Andy is also waiting for reference from ward sisiter!!! You dont work together do you - (time frame is similar ) Anyone any idea of job situation for nurses/midwifes. A meet would be good. We are in Doncaster.

Don't know for definate, but are you being skill assessed also on the application? I would think you probably do have to go through the anmc also, have you checked their website. When Andy gets his reference for the anmc, make sure it's on headed note paper and says he is still employed, mine didn't and they sent it back. It's a hassle isn't it? Because I was hospital trained I also had to get transcrips of my training, more waiting more hassle, however once the anmc has the correct paperwork they do process it quickly, got mine within 2 weeks.

Hi Lindsey, (and Margaret 2, sent you a PM the other day)

If you don't need the points for spouse skills then you need not be assessed by ANMC and could go as the dependent spouse.

I may be wrong but I believe that you register with the WA nursing body and that is all. This you can do from the UK while Andy does the ANMC (for migration skills and then does WA later (on arrival?).

There is a route of WA registration and then modified ANMC for Andy, which saves money but takes longer. Get all the papers right (as we did) and positive skills from ANMC is back by return post (12 days).

From what we have seen here midwives are in even greater demand than nurses.

We used a nurses DIY kit for ANMC application which helps greatly. Advice I can give is read the ASCO job description for nurse and ensure that any (personal) references address most or all of the key aspects. As Margaret says all must be on headed paper, duly signed and state hours worked , dates, level etc.

Good luck and hopefully we will see you on the other side.

Jon (for Lilian who is on nights)

Hi,my wife is a Registered Mental Health Nurse, G grade.

We're hoping to move to Perth late next year. Hoping to stay in or near Mandurah or surrounding areas.

We've been worried about the state of Mental Health Nursing in Oz, Sharon is an addictions specialist and we've heard that Nursing in general is a bit "backward" compared to the UK. No idea if this applies to MH nursing though.

There also seems to be a shorage of jobs for MH nurses.

We're worried, if anybody can make us feel better please do.

I personally would do the DIMIA application - you can't really do alot until you have your visa.
Also there is a meet coming up in Nov at Billing Mill, Northampton which shouldn't be too far from you.

I would register with Western Australia Nurses board, as the skills matching part of your visa asks you about where you are registered (but they put it as being a member of professional association) and that's why it would be best to be already be registered with WA, coz the skills matching database they put you on will improve your chances of finding a job.

Hope this helps

Great thanks Tiawamutu & Sme
Have already downloaded the form for WA, will complete in next couple of days. Will probably apply to hospitals direct. Whilst visiting Royal Perth, I got the impression they had people on their books just waiting for the immigration process to complete prior to them starting their posts.
Will check out the distance for Northampton, has the date yet to be arranged?

Hello all,

I'm a nurse already in Perth. We moved out in January 2004 and haven't looked back since.

It was a bit of a shock when I first started work out here as certain things were very different to what I was used to, but things have and are still changing and you quickly get used to how things work.

We found that my wage is pretty similar to what I was on in the UK and so when you take into account the lower cost of living over here we had more money. When we first came over I was the only one working and we managed to pay rent and build a house at the same time with me working 30hours a week (admittedly it was night duty).

You will hear people moan about poor staffing, but the ward I work on has 8 or 9 on an Early, 8 on a late and 4 at night. These are nearly all RN's too. We usually have a truckload of students too so sometimes there can be 13 or 14 people on an Early.

Roll on summer

Claire

Hi Claireg3

That sounds pretty good. what hospital do you work. I've been downloading stuff trying to work out how much pay I'll be on, but they all seem to show basic, so difficult to tell. Is it time 1/3 or 1/2 for lates/weekends/nights etc?
