Default Maternity Services (having a baby in Oz)

What is the score? I have done a search but come up empty.
Would be nice to know if it costs and arm and a leg or if it is fairly affordable relating to healthcare.
I mean over here it is free to have a baby and you dont pay for midwives, or birthing pools etc.
I know about the grant the government give you to have a baby, just need to know about the actual giving birth part in hospital.
I am totally confused about medical insurance. I get medicare etc.
Please help......

Hi,

As far I am aware from friends who've had kids here. If you get medicare and are a public patients then your care will be free. You will be expected to deliver vaginally unless there is a problem where you will be offered a c-section as a public patient which will also be free if an emergency.

There is a website called www.babycenter.com.au which will give you lots of hints and tips for oz born kids.
