Experienced UK research Nurse moving to the States
 

Hello. I would really appreciate some advice here.

We're relocating to Phildelphia with my husbands employer, a fantastic career move for him. A great opportunity for our family.
However, I am a Research Nurse here. Although I began PhD study 6 months ago I have just had to withdraw from the programme because it's not transferable. That was a tough one :(.
I revalidated my NMC registration last August.

Now my problem is I can't register in America because I'm too specialised now. I've been in teaching and research for the last 10 years.
Our move is temporary so we are expecting to be back in 3 years. By which time my NMC registration will have expired.

I contacted the NMC yesterday and they I can't maintain my regsitration unless I'm in a job that requires me to be registered as a nurse. So even if I worked as an RA in the States I can't keep my reg. here.

Any genius ideas out there??

You can still try and register with a state that you plan on living and working in to see if you meet requirements. Hopefully the visa your husband is moving with allows you to work.

Yes, the visa will allow me to work.

I don't really understand what you mean. If I'm not eligible for the NCLEX doesn't that mean I'm not a registered nurse in the States?

To sit NCLEX you need to meet state requirements and for that you need both clinical and theory hours in Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Adult. Only once you have met requirements will you get permission to sit NCLEX and only once you have passed that will you get a license and call yourself a nurse in the US

Yep. That's what I thought. But the state license expects you to have the NCLEX. At least, that's how I understand the information I've read.

I am a British ICU Nurse also trying to move state side (california).
Any info on how we can gain the required experience in paediatric, obstetrics and psych in order to be eligible to take the nclex?
