Default Advise on nurse salary in Sydney...can we really afford it?!

I'm a nurse that's been registered for 4 years in the uk, have just completed Australian nurse registration and have been asked by an agency if I'd consider a position in Sydney. Does anyone know the average nurse salary in Sydney after tax? The rent for property seems very high and I'm not sure if we could survive on my salary. I have a partner but he will be looking after our 2 year old while I work.

Agency pay is higher than government pay due to not having set pay each week surely ?

I don't know which agency you have an offer with but I have friends who earn around $50 a hour which is a lot but obviously don't have the garunteed work! I'm on around $58-000 a year in the private system with the same experience as you but I don't know how it compares to the public system!

Cost of living in Sydney is high. As a full time year 8 out in the public you can clear between $2500 and $2800 a fortnight, including at least one weekend.

As an RN4 as of July 2012 you will be earning $31.92 per hour plus penalties:

Late shift 12.5%
Night shift 15%
Saturday 50%
Sunday 75%
Public holiday 150% or normal rate plus an extra day off.

I now do part time and some agency work in the public to top up my salary.

Megancphillips is right. There are agencies out there that pay good money. Agency work can be tough, however I have not had any problems as yet. Once they see you are a good nurse hospitals tend to ask for you.

As an agency RN4 in specialty areas such as A&E, ICU, NICU, Midwifery you could be earning a base rate of around $40 per hour plus penalties. This includes a 10% loading to cover your annual leave and sick leave.

The rent is quite expensive. For further info check out www.domain.com.au or www.realestate.com.au

You can pay between $4.20 and $7 for a beer (shooner). It all comes to beer really

Good luck

Hi! My husband & I are planning to relocate to Australia next year (from the UK). I am a theatre nurse and have 16 years of experience. I would be very grateful if anyone could give me some info regarding the following:

1. what is the normal salary grade for my years of experience? or do I start from the bottom of the scale?

2. public or private hospital?

3. any hospitals/agencies offering relocation package/allowance to nurses relocating from overseas?

4. what is the annual leave entitlement for full time staff?

Looking forward to your replies. Thanks!

You should mention what state you're interested in as the rate varies considerably in some cases.
Good luck.

Hi ukecadet,

We are thinking of moving to Sydney but I heard cost of living and rental properties is highest in Sydney so our second choice is Melbourne.

Thanks!

ooohhhh come and work in our hosp, we are desperate for experienced theatre nurses. I also work for an agency (Belmore) which pays $92 per hour in the private sector , less in the public and more on weekends and ph. To be honest i dont do much agency work , its not really for me, and i am too knackered after working my normal job.

Link to our hosp is here http://www.austin.org.au/ (Melbourne)

When I first came to aus, i pretty much worked full-time agency (work was very sparodic), so not good when you have a family, but gave me a chance to have a good look around and i am still sure (nearly 5 years now), that i am in the best hosp there is in Melbourne. Its far from perfect, but which hosp is?

This thread should help you out with pay etc

You will absolutely NOT go in at the bottom of the scale, at the very least a grade2 year10, then once employed fill in some paperwork and you'll be an cns (clinical nurse specialist)

Thanks so much Margaret3! Will definitely look into Austin. So are you a full time staff in that hospital? Would it be possible to send you a private message so I can get more info regarding landing a job in Melbourne.

Thanks again!

In Sydney you'll be earning as a RN8.

I have never worked in the private but I think the rates are similar.

Rates in here
http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/nursing...e_rates_11.asp

I do agency work, mostly in ED or A&E in the public sector. I get specialty rates or an extra $11k a year on top of my nursing salary - pretty much pays my rent

RN8 $38.4 + 10% loading + penalty rates + 9% super + Agency top up for specialties such Theaters, ED, ICU, Midwifery.

Our rent in the Eastern Suburbs is $510. Two bedder with balcony and separate kitchen.

Good luck
