I am hoping to get the 189 skilled migrant visa for Australia. I'm a registered adult nurse. I am just querying whether say I get this visa and I work in Australia as a nurse but then decide I would like to go to new Zealand to work for a while, is the process of getting to nz easier visa wise if I have the aussie 189 visa?

Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) is a permanent resident visa and as such (assuming you meet the basic criteria for health and character) it will allow you access in to NZ at the border.
If you arrive in NZ with that visa you should be given NZ Resident Visa with immediate travel condition expiry. This visa will allow you to live study and work in NZ permanently, however if you left the country for whatever reason it would expire and you'd then have to use the AUS visa again to get back in. Of course this cannot be done forever as the AUS visa will expire at some point - 5 years I think.

Thanks for your answer! So to clarify on an Australian 189 skilled migrant visa, I could enter New Zealand to live and work there? Having this visa would make the process for me a bit easier?

Yes. For a time,.but as stated if you leave NZ your visa would expireand yoi would possibly have no way to get back into either New Zealand or Australia. You are much better off to stay in Australia long enough to obtain citizenship before making plans to go to NZ

Everything the others I have said, I'll back up. To clarify the position as mentioned by Dorothy, if you leave Australia then your travel rights on the 189 will expire (5 years after the original grant). At that point you can't get back into Aus without either citizenship or a RRV (Resident Return Visa).
So unless by then you are either a citizen or permanent resident of NZ you risk finding yourself without the ability to live in either country on a long term basis. Unless you are sure you can stay in NZ permanently, with the permanent ability to leave and re-enter) I would be looking at Aus citizenship before moving.
