Where do New Zealanders go on Holiday?
I have often wondered where people from New Zealand holiday.
People in the UK tend to often go to places with a warmer climate such as the Med or the Canaries. Do New Zealanders go to OZ or Bali or are there plenty of nice places to go in New Zealand?

I don't know where most Kiwis go, but the single biggest source of foreign
tourists in Australia is New Zealand...since there are only around 3 MM
Kiwis, and Oz gets a LOT of tourists, I'm going to hazard a guess that this
is the answer to your question as well...

Fiji seem to be a popular holiday spot at the moment. A bit of heat is a
must. I used to go to South East Asia for my annual holidays around
June. The snow would be falling in Dunedin and fares and accommodation
were dirt cheap as it's their off peak season.

Could you elaborate on 'dirt cheap' in terms of airfares? We're a family of 4, and wondering if we'll be able to afford travels 'abroad' once we're living in NZ. We can't wait to tour NZ every chance we get, but I grew up in Japan and had hoped to introduce my kids to the Asian/Pacific world too. Can you give us any idea of air fare costs?
Also, what about Dunedin - please come back and say a little something about living there - except for the weather (is it really THAT bad??), it seems like a great place with lowest cost of living (the houses I've seen listed on the internet for sale are the nicest I've come across for NZ, particularly somewhere called Roslyn Hill?) beautiful natural surroundings, and plenty going on. Yet I've only seen Dunedin mentioned once in this forum ("cold and damp" they said, and that was it, Dunedin dismissed).

Yes we NZers often go to Aus for holidays, and it can be cheaper to fly to
Sydney or Brisbane than from Auckland to Christchurch! Or you can get very
good deals to the south pacific Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa or New Caledonia
etc.
However, it is also very popular to head to the beach (almost any beach will
do!), I have been trying to book accomodation in Mahia (very remote beach on
the east coast of NI) for Christmas, but it is fully booked up sometime in
June! There are plenty of beautiful locations to visit, and you can spend a
life time doing it.

Check out www.airnz.co.nz
But I visited Japan this year, and got cheap airfares on Qantas for $1600
return from Auckland, I went with Qantas to get stop overs in Aus.

For the "once in a few years" type holiday NZ families do go overseas - LAX,
Samoa, Cook Islands & of course Fiji & Qld. Professional singles especially
"pop over" to SYD or MEL for shows & shopping but for the long weekends,
Christmas & any other weekend it is mostly "the bach" at "the lake" or "the
beach" or "the Sounds" - Wanaka, Akaroa, Queen Charlotte for Chch residents;
Taupo, Mt Maunganui, Whangamata etc for NIers.

I haven't used all these firms so can't vouch for them but you should
get some idea of prices etc.

It's the cultural centre of the Universe, the weather isn't really that
bad we only say that to discourage Aucklanders from moving down here.
There's a wealth of amazing scenery and opportunities for outdoor
pursuits on your doorstep. The pace is certainly slower than the other
main centres but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
We've got plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars and around 17000
students from Otago University to keep them in business. The area where
the houses you were looking at is Roslyn, Maori Hill which is directly
above the City's green belt and looks down on the harbour basin.
If you are ever down this way the local beer is speights, the town is
rugby mad and the natives are reasonably friendly
