Are there any Nursing jobs in NZ?
Hi
We moved to NZ, with the wife being offered a six month contract to cover maternity cover, with an email to say that once here there will be no issues for a permanent role, so we could apply for a visa, that will allow us to stay here. Since being here since beginning of September, my wife has joined the NZNO, and had conversations with her manager, who advised her that she needs to re-apply for any position that comes up, but no permanent roles are issued... they are all 6 month 0.6fte roles that will not allow us to renew visa's. We hear that NZ is seriously short of Nurses, but my wife is using agencies, applying directly and still no roles coming up. Funny thing is, after the job position is closed or she does not even get an email to say not being taken forward, the job is reposted. Yes this is a moan, and I know people will slag us off for this, but Nursing in NZ is not all its cracked up to be. We are contemplating a move to Australia, where she can get a 2 year visa. We wanted to apply for residency in NZ, but cannot even get that because of the job contracts, is this right? Can we apply for residency without a job offer whilst being here in NZ, and working here...? Please can someone advise us what we are doing wrong? Myself as a First Aid Trainer with Level 4 Qualifications a s a First Responder is struggling for work.... What is happening... What are we doing wrong? Help would be appreciated. |

Hi there, what area are you in?
Has your wife applied directly to the DHB's? |
Re: Are there any Nursing jobs in NZ?
Plenty of jobs around, as above apply directly to the DHB, in my experience most private sector jobs will be wary as your mrs has little “kiwi experience”
Have you seen the pinned post above about how they like nursing CV laid out? Also dont know if i mossed it whats your current visa status if you dont mind me asking |
Re: Are there any Nursing jobs in NZ?
Hi
Thanks for your replies. We are in Whangarei. My wife has applied to most if not all of the DHB's, and none are offering any roles that will allow us to extend our visa. Thank you about the CV, yes it was laid out specifically for the NZ Market. Our current Visa is Essential Skills, till Mar 18th next year. We could not go for a residency visa as the contract was only 6 months, and the timescale did not allow us to apply to the EOI, so we were advised to get in to NZ, and finding jobs would be so much easier. This is not so.... She has applied to DHB's in Northland, has agencies working for her, and they do not seem to want to employ english nurses, and even a couple of agency contacts said, they are trying to make it harder now...... So we are at a loss, we have done what migration specialists advised, and what the agencies have asked us to do, but still no joy. So it looks like we will have to leave NZ in March unless a miracle happens... |

Another point, is the DHB's are only currently offering 0.2 to 0.4 fte, and telling nurses they have to bump up the hours, on the bureau.
We feel that even they they said, full time positions would not be a problem, NDHB, have not fulfilled their side of the discussions. |

Thanks again for the reply. Yes we have tried Waikato, and still no joy. No we have not tried Pulse and Medacs, but we will give them a try.... We are so scared that we will not be able to stay in NZ.... |
Re: Are there any Nursing jobs in NZ?

Re: Are there any Nursing jobs in NZ?
Hi Guernsey2612,
Another thought is for your wife to try directly for jobs in the community. ie General Practice community nursing jobs, as they are always crying out for nurses! Particularly in rural areas but really all over NZ. You should be able to see applications for these on sites like seek.co.nz or by google searching general practice nursing NZ. The other thought I had for her is to try district nursing jobs. It won't be as a registered nursing position (ie may mean less pay), but it may get your foot in the door. Happy New Year Samantha |

Happy New Year Samantha There are jobs in NZ, but there are is a lots of competition. December/January is a difficult time as the NZ graduates will be looking for work at the end of their studies or at the end of their 1 year new graduate programme. Check your CV is tip-top and ensure that each cover letter is tailored to each position you apply for. Good luck Gill |

This is not so.... However it is true that all District Health Boards are what is called accredited employers. This means that they are free to offer positions to anyone, home grown or from overseas. That is not the same as an occupation (nurse) being in serious shortage. It is a method to facilitate the employer to easily find the employees it wants/ needs, temporary or not. Justcol has come up with a very good thought. The Corrections Dept is also an NZ accredited employer. Approach them about this as well as each and every district health board direct + nurse agencies BTW I think it stinks that a DHB employed your wife in this way, knowing she was from overseas and that the chances of residency under such a contract would be nil. What do you mean by First Responder? Much of the 1st response here in NZ is volunteer. |
