Wow thanks all for your replies that's really helpful. It looks like our household outgoings may be fairly similar or slightly higher than in the uk which I expected, now to look for jobs that will pay the way!

Yip we are in the same boat as we are hoping to buy a house in Tauranga asap. Most of them as you say are Auction or Price By Negotiation with only a tiny amount of them stating a price.
We've found the best way is to contact the agent to find out a ball park or if it's a private sale, make an appointment for a viewing and discuss it if you are keen.
Most of them always quote the RV, but this can be very deceiving. Most properties where we are go for between $50 000 and $200 000 above RV so still anyone's guess!!!
You can Google the address as you may find there is further info on sites like Open2View with more pictures, or you could see the ad on the agent's own website. Failing that there's the site qv where you can pay a small amount to find out all sorts for that property.......when it was sold last, what price it went for, local prices, history of the section and covenants etc.

That is, indeed, an awesome post Escapedtonz

For house prices Auckland council has a rates viewer so you can look up what the last valuation for those was. When looking at houses that have prices most seem to want 20-30% over the rated valuation. Not sure if other councils have the same.

QV might be able to help a little with that.

Not for everywhere and certainly not for Auckland but many areas, including ours, seem to peg possible resale cost at around the QV value.
QV value directly relates to rate costs also , depending on what % $ rate is levied by the local council.

on mortgages - my advise to anyone would be decide on the amount you feel comfortable paying every fortnight, find out what mortgage that would give you then work out what deposit you would require to get a house you can afford in an area you are happy to live,

House prices in Tauranga have rocketed recently and most houses are advertised as auctions now.
