And the answer to the thread is:
Link.
Over half of tourism operators say the Rugby World Cup failed to deliver the boost to their businesses which had been promised.
A survey of 121 of its members by the Tourism Industry Association (TIA) shows around a third considered that the tournament period was either worse or much worse for them than the same time in 2010.
Another 18 per cent said they saw no change.
Not quite half, or 46 per cent, said the RWC had provided better times for them than the previous year.

Re: RWC - Triumph or flop?
Our local Museum was hoping for a bit of a boost, but visitor numbers were no better than the same period for the previous year & overseas visitor numbers followed the trend for the rest of 2011, down about 40-50%

Re: RWC - Triumph or flop?
Other non tourist related businesses suffered too. We had no calls for our business during the games (very unusual - we even checked that the phones were still working ). The week they finished we had 3. I have heard other business owners with similar experiences.
