Nuclear-war
This may seem like a humorous question because that is what it is from today's perspective. However, in the 80's there were a lot of people who said they're going to emigrate to New Zealand because that country is so remote that it is safe from the possible nuclear-war and fall-out.
have you ever met people whose primary reason for moving to NZ has been to escape the nuclear-war?

but there are hippy retreats in this neck of the woods. I'll check out their t shirts for CND and ban the bomb slogans.
