The blue colour is the normal colour of water just like unpolluted skies are blue. Other water is brown, yellow or green due to impurities such as tannins, clay, algae etc. SI NZ waters are too low in nutrients and too cold to support algal blooms. The river flows are swift and voluminous and the soils are strongly stabilized by ground cover so the concentration of clay is very low. The lake waters consequentially have a very low turbidity. The "rock flour" explaination is false.

I thought water's 'true' colour was transparent - it was only blue because it was reflecting the sky above.

When I turn my tap - it doesn't run blue.

Brown, yellow or green water is simply a result of pollutants/mud/sand cloudying the water from its origianl blue?

??

thats not actually correct....when we run a bath the water in it is blue, just like Tekapo's, quite obviously blue. Our water comes off the second gully on the face of the remarkables. No grit in that either, we drink it, its great....err,thats before we have a bath in it

Also depends on how old you are. As we age, eye sees colours as gradually less blue, then more red, then more brown.

My bath water is quite definately blue and I dont bathe outdoors so there is no sky to influence the colour. It is a very bright blue and feels very luxurious

Nice photos - brings back memories, from glacier walking, to bungee off the K Bridge to skiing at the Remarkables, including a very VERY :scared: scary trip up one day with no visibility and a loose snow chain! :scared:
