Cool New Zealand questions - HELP!

Some advice needed if possible.

Me and my wife next year want to work in New Zealand for a year at least maybe 3 to get residency.

She is a nurse and has found possible vacancies across NZ.

Ultimately after we get the residency we would like to spend 6 months in NZ then rent the house off (which we hope to buy) and spend 6 months back in Britain staying with relatives or renting.

Is this possible? 6 months in NZ and 6 months in Britain?

Thanks in advance folks!

Ian

Perfectly possible provided you have :

Indefinate Return visa
or
Citizenship (Passport).

If you are staying up to three years, I am sure you will get the former and if you are prepared to wait for the ceremony, etc the latter...

Good luck. (Very similar plans to ourselves incidently)

In order to get an Indefinite RRV, you have to live in NZ for 2 years after you've got PR.

http://www.immigration.govt.nz/Migra...ningResidents/

For Citizenship (which allows you to get a NZ passport), you have to live in NZ for three years. The 3 year 'clock' starts from when you first arrive in NZ (you must already have, or become a Permanent Resident within the three years):

www.citizenship.govt.nz

The NZ govt is proposing to change this to 5 years, and the clock will start from when you get PR, rather than when you first arrive in NZ as is the case at the moment. All this means is that it will simply take longer for you to get NZ Citizenship/passport, which won't really affect you, unless you were intending to move to Australia.

So what you are saying is that from when you arrive it takes 3 years to get residency and a further 2 years before you can return to work in the UK?

Is that right?

No. Currently, when you get PR you also get a return visa valid for two years. Once that visa expires you apply for another. The NZ immigration then consider how much of a commitment you have made to NZ in the previous two years, to assess the period the new visa will be valid for.

Provided you have made sufficient commitment (see there web-site) you may well be issued with an 'indefinate' return visa. As it states, with that you can come and go as you please with no restrictions. Effectively, akin to citizenship apart from you can't vote and they can boot you out easier if required.

You can apply for Citizenship after having legally being in NZ for three years. you must have PR at the time you lodge your application. (This may change to 5 years, but only talk at the moment).

Therefore, if you get PR and not the indefinate return visa and you leave NZ, you may be denied entry if you have let it lapse.

read the web-site, it is very clear about all this...
