We moved Sept 2014 and in total, including insurance and costs in NZ it worked out to just over £8000 for a 40ft container. We also brought our car which made it a little more than if you are only bringing furniture. We used PSS.

We also used PSS in March 2012 and paid £5000 for a 40ft container from Preston, UK to Wellington. Didn't need insurance as my new employer covered the whole shipment on the company insurance which saved around £1500. We didn't bring any vehicles. Just furniture and the like.

Thank you for you replies we've had quote come through today for 7000 for the sole use of a 40ft container although we only have 1200 cubic feet of stuff so may have to leave some here!

1,200 cuft is only barely more than a 20ft container. .... I wonder how accurate the estimate of 1,200cuft is?

When you start to have to quantify the volume of junk you've purchased in cubic feet it makes you feel very guilty. I used to have a pen knife and was very content with that pen knife.

Lol, we threw most of our childhood memories away the last time we went so haven't really gathered much being back here in the last 5 years, thinking of jumping in there ourselves to save on flights lol
