A long way to go and need advice - Teacher and HGV driver
Hello all
I'm three years off from finishing my PGCE and gaining the necessary two years experience, before me and my peeps can re-apply for NZ (second time around - lived in NZ for 2 yrs, first time failed - long story). Can I ask if anyone knows where the best place or demand for primary school teachers is, currently? It would be interesting to know.
Never giving up - we need to come home again

I am pretty sure that competition for teaching jobs is extremely competitive. There are lots of local, NZ qualified teaching graduates that struggle to find work. Best place is to look at Auckland possibly or maybe rurally. Housing costs prohibitive for most in Auckland and rural teaching in NZ would be a living nightmare for most immigrants. Rural living here is not the same as rural living in the UK.

Thanks for your help. I read pretty much the same thing on teach nz site. But they did mention that in a few years time, things may pick up, due to retirement ages of employed teachers and birth rates. Hope that's the case.
We're very much open to rural living, having lived that way before in Duntroon, SI, for two years. But as you say, housing is tough.
Really appreciate your input. Thanks again.

As you perhaps know, teachers are not in any sort of shortage here in New Zealand . That is not just anecdotal but comes from NZ Immigration and also NZ Dept of Labour.
There are teachers here who simply cannot gain any sort of full or part time permanent contract and some that now have something but it has taken years . Even for those it will probably have been about knowing someone at the school.
Never say never I suppose. I wish you luck.

It's going to be really tough. Perhaps I should specialise. Thank you though.
We came over on hubby's visa last time (hgv1 driver), but it was just a temporary one. It really made us wary as he was made redundant after two years ... we lost everything I think we might just have to do the same again and work from there. :S

From what you write , you are looking at a five year time frame?
Have your OH become a tanker driver. It is the only way I know that an HGV person can uplift a visa towards NZ residency. It is specialised and if he gained employment with an NZIS accredited employer you could apply for a work to residence visa. If he would be management, so much the better.
With the teaching. Yes. Perhaps having some specialist ( perhaps multi-faceted) training may help , particularly for a rural school . Just because teachers are not in shortage in any way, does not mean a school wouldn't accept someone that could fit their bill.
By having a dual approach to this, you will help your odds.
Anyone have any other thoughts or ideas for this couple.
I have to say I really admire your verve & commitment. You guys deserve to make an NZ return.

Thank you so much. We won't give up
My OH has his ADR and has done tanker driving with fuel. Plus his two year experience driving the SI. So it's still in demand? The accredited list of employers looks a lot shorter than in previous years. Does anyone recommend a company?
We were devastated when we had to leave NZ.
That was the visa we came out on last time. Then at the end of the two years we were just applying for the other visa, to make it permanent, when him and another UK guy were made redundant.
Since returning to the UK, my OH just hasn't been the same ... I guess we loved it out there. So I went and did a degree and should get onto PGCE for study next year (I narrowly missed it this year, on the waiting list).
Tis not easy.
