There are plenty of suburbs I wouldn't live in because of lifestyle, but really rough suburbs I think are very rare - only places I'd say are rough would be some pockets of South Auckland (Otara, some parts of Mangere etc)

If you are also looking for good cafe strips the Ponsonby, K-Road, Mt Eden, St Heliers are all excellent. The breakfast/brunch quality is amongst the best in the world I think.
