Income tax rates & Nationak Insurance Question
I know that you pay Income Tax on every penny earned in NZ but can anyone give me an idea on how much I would bring home after deductions when earning 105k - 110k NZ dollars in Wellington?

Hi Stephen, welcome back, so you got a job offer?
Gross income (salary / wage) $105,000.00
PAYE (including earners' levy) minus $34,366.02
KiwiSaver employee deductions minus $3,150.00
Net payment equals $67,483.98
Net payment less payroll giving donation equals $67,483.98
IRD website has calculators on the right hand side

Hi Mrs Fychan,
No job offer yet, but I am talking with employers and job agencies (including interviews). One of the topics discussed is that of salary so I am trying to find a starting level that doesn't over-price me in the NZ market but which will allow me to ensure I am not worse off by too much.

I think I read that you are a software developer?
sorry to say:
A Sr. Software Engineer / Developer / Programmer earns an average salary of NZ$87,924 per year. Pay for this job does not change much by experience, with the most experienced earning only a bit more than the least

Re: Income tax rates & Nationak Insurance Question
Perhaps you could provide a source for that. I know some experienced software developers getting over $100k. The average could be right, but highly experienced software developers can earn a lot more, especially if they have project management or management experience alongside it.
They quote different salary ranges for developers depending on precise skillset i.e. Java, C++, .Net, Mobile, Full Stack (whatever that is), Other and that is before quoting different ranges for Auckland, Wellington and Christchuch.
I am not a developer but my role is in that survey and I am paid about the middle of the range quoted for my area. I didn't push for higher when I joined them a few months ago (and I think you can get away with that in the current market) because I really hated working at the previous place and wanted to leave.

Obviously, or you would hope, those in Management Roles would get more.

Re: Income tax rates & Nationak Insurance Question
from the Hayes calculator 86K is average and highest for SrSoftDev is 100K.
and I noticed that MrF is underpaid by 5k for the lowest amount in his field and by 40K for the average. His excuse is that he works for a charity and it was more than the last place he worked at where he was also a CTO, so when I say it has taken 4 years to get a salary here to match what he was earning in the UK, when he was not a CTO, makes a lot of sense.

Re: Income tax rates & Nationak Insurance Question
As a crusty ex-IT person I have the impression that "Software Engineer" has evolved to the equivalent of "Sanitation Executive".
No graduate and post graduate engineering qualifications; just job description creep.
"Engineer" is a protected description in Germany, but not, apparently, elsewhere.
Glad I got out before it was all outsourced to India - it's cheap so it must be good, mustn't it??

Re: Income tax rates & Nationak Insurance Question
and now MrF is expected to cover for the CEO as well as his own job for 3 months as the replacement can not start until January, he doesn't have the hours in the day to cover his own job let alone take on some ones else at the same time especially for a measly extra 20% on his wage.
I've always said he has M U G tattoo'ed on his forehead.

I did, paid the money and had nothing else on that day. He seemed the better bet being younger and into IT and I had just started as Administrator of the IT dept, plus he can put up a shelf or two.

Sr. Software Engineer / Developer / Programmer Salary (New Zealand)
Obviously, or you would hope, those in Management Roles would get more.

I have priced myself at 105k and finding that the agencies think this is something employers would not find too much (at this stage at least).
Thanks
