Default Import Tax costs?

Hi there everyone,

Coming over on a visitor visa in Feb 09 as no job offers yet. Will have to pay for a return ticket (more cost) and also import tax on our personal effect in the container. Does anyone know what the costs are on the import tax for personal possessions please????
Thanks

Hi - we came on a return ticket (which we found cheaper than a one way anyway). Why don't you leave your stuff in a container where you are and then ship when you get a job. If you manage to get a 2 year work permit you can then avoid the 12.5% tax (I think??).

Hope that is of some help.

I'd agree with the above post, a std discounted return will be as cheap as a single anyway. I came on a visitors visa and applied for a work permit when I got here, having had the job offer before I came. When my goods arrived I had got the permit back and didn't have any import charges, though suffered more charges anyway as the removal co went bust but that's another story.
