Just so you know, family income of circa $100,000 with two adults and two kids is approx median rank in NZ. Which is why when posters come on here and claim to be "living like kings" on $70k with five kids (doing "loads" of hobbies - seriously, we have had this!) we know that they are either (a) lying (b) mortgage free/ v. low mortgage (c) clueless (d) fast heading for financial ruin.

The "just missing the family thing" is massive and has driven many back to the UK. What about coming for a year as a lifestyle experience? Then you can enjoy your time in NZ and know you will be heading home - and while your son is preschool such a plan would not be a problem. Once home again you have real experience to use in considering a permanent move if that is what you both wish.

I wouldn't go unless you really want to. There is a real danger to become stuck in NZ. Check out the costs of flights to the UK. Decide how often you would like to go and visit (every 2 years, 5 years?) and then calculate how much money you will need to set aside per month. Don't expect your family to come and visit. NZ is really far and flights are expensive. Also there will come the day when your parents are simply too old or too sick to fly that long.
I went back to Europe because family to me is much more important than secenery. I had a few years left with my dad and I was at his bedside when he died. I think that it is very important to be there for your parent. Also do consider that your children might decide to move back to Europe as adults.
Go check NZ out. But if you really don't like NZ be dead honest to your Partner. Maybe you can work out an alternative. If you like NZ than take the plunge )

You may well be right as we are mortgage free and probably clueless :-) but it is worth saying that (as many have pointed out) if you entertain yourself it doesn't have to be expensive. Camping and tramping, casting for fish off a beach, gardening in a NZ climate, photography.... cost peanuts. Even salmon/trout fishing, driving to a ski field or owning a trailer boat/sailing dinghy aren't out of sight on a limited income. What does cost is getting offshore but why leave 'paradise' :-)
I would dread having to live in a country with serious problems...

He does have one advantage over you I think, as well as being UK registered, he is registered with AHPRA in Australia so can transfer by the Trans-Tasman agreement (I think) to NZ.

Moving from the UK to NZ as a NICU nurse? Just came across your post, I must go back and research your previous ones not cos I'm a stalker but because I have a friend looking to do the same and any info is useful. We are both currently drowning in the visa details as we are only used to the Aussie side of things.

That sounds like a good lead, thanks ever so much. You're right about it being niche - you guys usually get snapped up pretty quick!
