Our shippers packed a kitchen rubbish bag in one box. It had some brown liquid in when it arrived. Strangely we didn't break that seal!

We were a bit gutted that we gave away the contents of our alcohol cabinet then found it could have come with us

Anyway - if you do pack food in your luggage make sure you write a list of all food items you've brought and keep it handy.

We brought a load of stuff back from Aussie - nuts, crisps, dried fruit, biccies. (over-shopped for picnics on hols, didn't want to waste it). Customs in Wellington asked what food was in there and I pulled out my list and read it to them. They said "You can come through again, thanks for doing that" and didn't want to check anything.

As long as it's not fresh fruit or anything like that and you're honest about what you have they are happy and helpful.

The food in a container attracts rats who will then eat EVERYTHING, it also causes you to be questioned, in person at the docks, believe me I KNOW, some open biscuits were accidentally left in a plastic container by our packers. there are no problems are bringing most food items in person, just declare everything!
