I want my J2 phone to screech come Sunday.

I can't find a way that it will. It's a bit like me. A bit oldish.

yep, thats the same as our emergency alert. Any mobile, within range of the towers in the affected area, will recieve the text (SMS) message. Doesn't need to be a smartphone, non-internet phones get it too. As do fax ma hines, ATM machines, internet dongles, in fact anything with a Sim card. The message is teageted by the phone companies at the Sim cards. Even international visitors in the area will get it.

I will try and establish what systems etc the NZ system is using, but its fraught with problems if its targetted only at updated smartphones, that would be mad! Australia's system is nit perfect but its streets ahead, simply by not relying on every having a smartphone.
Does the NZ version also have a capability for voice message to landline, do you know?

Edited - just read their updated website, what a cockeyed half-arsed system. Sorry, but from the research done her its clear that many people do not have smartphones, and if they do then they are not the new models. Relying on smartphone capability just doesn't reach a wide enough audience. That's why the Aussie one goes for SMS instead, plus voice to landline. You get a far greater spread, never 100% but far far higher than NZ will reach.

Wouldn’t a text be pointless at times? Overnight my phone is on do not disturb so it wouldn’t come through. At work it’s on silent and sometimes I forget to take it back off.

The current alert system works. Who cares if there was a slip up last time at stupid o’clock in the morning. The main thing is that it woke me up, sure I was confused as hell but it did it’s job. I know that even in the dead of night if there’s an emergency alert I’m going to wake up to it. Without them realising, it was a success

The idea of a text/SMS is that not everyone has a smartphone, many people still have old style mobiles in Aus, not internet enabled. Also from memory, research showed that in times of disaster texts are more likely to go through and arrive at their destination, whereas internet based messages fail first as the infrastructure often suffers more serious damage. By just using the normal telephony system the messages have a higher delivery rate.

Trying to set up the Emergency Alert System on my Galaxy S5 phone and it would appear to be impossible to do. It's been nice knowing you folks x

Seeing as so many people whinged and complained about being woken at 1.30am when it went off last time, I would say its a great system and was a resounding success. My phone is on mute and it came though this evening, again a resounding success

I think some just arent happy unless they have something to complain about and of course being kiwi alert system it couldnt possibly as good as someone elses

Sorry I had meant a text would not come through ‘do not disturb’. The actual alert system does cause I got all three last time.

Many people who have whinged to emergency services in Australia about messages that they felf they did not need, have changed their tune when they get one that really counts.
Remember, the trigger for these systems was the bushfires in Victoria a few years ago. Any system is worth it if it saves a few people from dying like that.

I'd rather get one that ends up being a false alarm than none at all. Unfortunately even with a smart phone I didn't receive any alert tonight. Usual half-arsed kiwi system. Why do it properly when you can f*** it up.

Yep we're toast as well; two phones in the house, both on different networks and neither of us got the alert either.

The good folk on NZ turf need the alert to reach everyone doesn't it? The aim is to reach all those in the alert area isn't it?

It didn't seem to reach my J2 Samsung phone . Not even a txt. I don't know if there is something I can do for it or if it's not a goer for the J2.

MrBEVS work phone is the one always with him. It's a sturdy thing that does the basic job but not a smart phone by any means. Most tradies don't ponce with smart phones on site.
His phone didn't vibrate for him.

Both = no alert which is not the aim of this game is it.

I want the alerts.

There is an ability to leave feedback about this if the enabled phone did not receive the alert.
I don't have an enabled phone it seems BUT I left feedback.
