Default Dunedin - best/worst suburbs?

My wife and I are looking at moving to Dunedin from Auckland at the end of the year to buy our first house. Unfortunately, we have no idea which suburbs we should be looking at. Help would be appreciated.

Any idea which are the best and worst suburbs in terms of:
- weather
- affordability
- people
etc

Hello We spent several years in Dunners. Moved from Auckland too, worst decision we ever made but that's another story. It depends what you are after so maybe you could say what kind of things you are wanting in an area?
Macandrew Bay is nice, popular with families and a nice outlook on the Peninsula. Maori Hill is the 'posh' bit, you'll pay a premium for a house there. Roslyn is next door and a bit cheaper but still with the 'posh' tag.

We lived out at Brighton, stunning coastline but seen by a lot of locals as being 'too far out'. (17kms). Ocean View is also very nice. Tunnel Beach is towards town on the coast, some nice new builds going on there.

Saint Clair is lovely too - by the beach, some trendy cafes and bars.

Be careful buying in Sawyers Bay and that side of the peninsula as many houses there lose the sun early and see little of it in the winter (mind you, Dunedin isn't the sunniest city in NZ!). Waverley is known as 'windy Waverley) as the wind hits it straight off the water.

Tell us a bit more about what you're after.

I need to know what is important to you before giving you some ideas, the potential areas are very diverse.

Sea views?
Close to beach?
Flat area or hilly area?
Close to town?
Where will you be working?
Out in the country?
Near a school?
Do you mind driving a 20km commute?
Have you got kids, if so how old?
Do you need to be close to shops/café/pub?

I'd be genuinely interested to hear about it? Is the story already elsewhere on this site?
