Another of the pitfalls are those blessed kamikazi power poles and signposts that jump out into the middle of the road at night.
Regular feature around here are the tyre tracks across the middle of roundabouts and grass verges - we all too often hear of folks having had their mailboxes and fencing rearranged by some hoon parking his car upside down on their front lawn too.

Definitely sounds like everyone has difference experiences.
On the original question about driving licence, i'm planning to convert mine quite soon after arriving so that it's done and out the way

Re: Driving licence
Very simple, you just roll up at the centre with your paper and plastic UK licence and have a mug shot there and then and will receive your NZ version in the post....you must carry your licence whilst driving/riding.

Re: Driving licence
yes there is an eye sight test, very easy. I had a free eye sight test done at Spec Savers which included test for driving licence they gave me a form to take along, allow about an hour, MrF had his at the AA Shop and his took 30 seconds

I didn't have an eye test. Think it's only if you wear glasses for driving? Very simple read the board

Re: Driving licence
We got ours whilst on holiday as we have NZ address on our bank account - we both had eye test done in AA shop took English photo licence, proof of address and paid a few dollars and a bit extra for the photocopies of our documents. Given a slip of paper and licence came through week later.

I don't know anything about you, you might be terrible at driving on the UK road network, you might be totally blind with no arms and no legs and the only way you can manage the car controls is by clenching your buttocks around the steering wheel whilst changing gear with your belly button blindly guessing which way the roads wind. Even if all these things are correct, when you land here you'll still be in the top few percent of drivers in NZ.

When wearing contact lenses, you will get asked to prove you're wearing them as driving without assisted vision is a serious offence in this country. All I've had to do was have Mr Officer staring into my eyes with a little torch that confirmed this. I think they may ask you take them out to prove them, or there are other methods they may use.

Do you wear glasses or contact lenses? If you do, it'll show on your license and you best be wearing one of them when being pulled over for going 2kmh over the speed limit, especially on bank holiday weekends.

Re: Driving licence
By eye test I meant the look into the box with lights and read a few letters and say which direction the colours were coming from. That's what the AA did when I swapped the bike license nearly 3 years back.

I don't wear distance glasses but I did have to take the simple 'read the letters test on the wall behind me' same as Mr F in 2012.
