I'd guess you are talking about a different place than the Whangarei I know in Northland.
I've never heard anything bad spoken other than it's pretty quiet. It is a beautiful place and if I could work from up there I'd be there in a shot

heard from several news sources. I had been there once, there is small town called Waipu just before Whangarei, there is a pizza outlet just there in Wapiu, delicious pizza and good beer. Also Waipu beach is the best beach I ever saw.
