Advice please - Moving to NZ soon....

Re: Advice please - Moving to NZ soon....
When it comes to shipping, is there much difference in price for like an extra square metre? Like, obviously, if it doesn't cost much more generally for a little bit more space then I might as well use it up. But if every square metre makes a significant difference, then I plan on being a little stricter with what I'm packing....

After going through the quotes etc quite recently - I would say not, the cost of getting a whole container to ourselves fort he sake of a couple of hundred ££ is less of a headache for us - PSS who we have chosen to go with gave me 2 quotes based on what I said I would like to take and what I said we could probably leave (ie, bed, fridge freezer etc - we have a 3bed house with 3 children) the cost didnt work out that much more, so we have decided to take as much as we can over and then if its not needed, its not a major worry!
Great advice. Thank you. Didn't even consider that I could just ask for two separate quotes. Though we'll only be packing for two, so I don't think we could fill up anywhere near a whole container to ourselves.

hello
Another consideration as well as what you should and shouldn't take which is a mix of personal preference and need as most of the replies above give great advice on, check out the NZ customs service website for things you actually CAN'T take. New Zealand Customs Service : Prohibited imports
Your removal company should have pointed out any such items when they did the survey but always worth checking the list just in case as you're responsible ultimately for what you import.
Hope that helps? Lots of other useful removals tips over on our BE International Removals Advice forum.

That list is very useful - thank you.
Although, I'm now slightly confused - listed in the Unsafe Goods are Pedal Bicycles, which would imply that you can't bring a pedal bicycle in the container. However, in a clause on the Product Safety Standards it says These regulations do not apply if the vehicle is ...().. second hand.
So.. does this mean we can bring pedal bicycles in the container as long as they have been used?

Also, that they may require evidence of being professionally cleaned otherwise they may have to undergo it again when they get to New Zealand.

I was under the impression that any bikes being brought into the country just had to be thoroughly disinfected and cleaned, and that customs will inspect them to ensure that they are spotless upon arrival.

It is true that all bikes (and everything else that has been outdoors - so any sports equipment that has been used outdoors, any shoes that are used outdoors, other clothing, tents, cricket set, golf clubs....you name it - anything) MUST be free from soil and plant material. Best way to make sure is to do it yourself. clean it to within an inch of it's life making sure you turn everything upside down to get in the places you wouldn't normally dream about cleaning.
It is only where vehicles are concerned that you need to consider professional cleaning, but in my experience it doesn't make any difference as it is likely that a vehicle will be ordered to be cleaned at this end again even though you may have paid for it to be done in the UK before it was placed in a container. It's a 10-16 week process so likely some dirt will have appeared, or some surface rust or a spiders web.
Customs are only interested in the items in the container to ensure nothing is illegal or banned and to ensure you aren't skipping paying import duty, as by rights everything in that container should have been owned by you for at least 12 months and you have no intention to sell on within 2 years.
With regards to a bicycle, if it doesn't meet NZ legal spec - so if it does not meet compliance here then it is possible it will not make it in the country - so for example if it doesn't have reflectors front, rear and on the wheels or if it doesn't have a bell it could be knocked back.....not sure whether they'd actually ban an item for these reasons or just make sure you fixed it ?
Unlikely you'd have your container pulled for checking anyway, but there is a potential for it to be checked.
In our case Customs weren't even interested in checking.
Once it clears customs the inventory of your container will go to MPI who will check to see if there is anything there worth a gander - so this is the government department who are interested in cleanliness and to make sure no animal or plant material enters the country. It is a good idea to make sure all questionable items (any wicker, gardening stuff etc) are together in as few packages / boxes as possible as they'll more or less want to check everything.
Once MPI have given you the all clear or have given you a list of the items they want to inspect you can then arrange delivery to your home or wherever they are going. The items that MPI want to inspect must remain unopened until an MPI officer has been to inspect on site - which you have to pay for (license to print money). The more packages the higher the cost. We had around 35 boxes and it cost $440 extra (nearly 6 years ago) and out of that they ordered one 2 man tent to be washed....which you can't do yourself so that was another $70.

We just came in with 4 bicycles, one was as new only having been ridden a couple of times. No problems at all.
The only things we got picked up on were a Weber gas BBQ and a weed eater - $120 for both to be treated

Re: Advice please - Moving to NZ soon....
Hi, looking for relocation company to come next week to give us a quote for moving our worldly goods over to the Kapiti Coast towards end of October
We have a list of items what we would like to take to furnish and get the kids comfortable
But what items would you say you could not do without?
Is there anything that you would say I really shouldn't bother taking over?
Thanks in advance
Shuvit

Also for relocation companies, be super careful. We had a terrible experience with so many things going wrong so choose a company with good reviews on the internet. And understand who they deal with for the delivery in NZ and check the reviews of that company. Be in touch with them throughout and properly insure your goods, and make sure they are properly valued. When the goods arrive you might receive a whole bunch of boxes and be pressured to sign a form to indicate goods were received and you are happy with them. It is impossible to check all your goods are 100% until you have unpacked everything so do not sign your rights away even if it feels very uncomfortable. Sorry if I am writing in a negative way but I have just seen removals go badly wrong, and I saw it with myself! Good luck. Be diligent!

We had quite a troublefree experience in the end using Anglo Pacific and then Efficient this end. (Though we found AP's "tracking" service totally useless,we managed to do it ourselves. And Efficient were excellent.)
Regarding MPI inspections,we were prepared for several boxes to be inspected but we surprised by what was retained for inspection. Some things we knew would be a certainty such as cat beds and vacuum cleaner but out of two sets of garden furniture, they requested only one for inspection, likewise my husband's golf clubs but not mine. No idea why! In the end I think they inspected about 9 boxes out of around 300(!) and did not charge us anything at all.

We are currently at this stage too - my head hurts!
