What are the rules about being registered with the town hall?
Hi,
I have been living an working in Eindhoven for about 5 months. I am registered with the town hall against the flat I rent in the city center.
I am being sent to work in Scotland from 3 to 6 months. What I would like to do during this time is give up my flat to save on the rent.
However as I will still be paying tax, health insurance, etc in Netherlands do I need to keep renting a property? Or can I just change my address to one of my friends and they will receive and letters I need? What about city tax?
Any advice on the best thing to do for this situation is greatly appreciated.
Dan

It could be that the tax authority, will look at your friends income for the rent you should be paying them and maybe they do not.
I doubt if any one here has ever been in the same situation as this, I would certainly ask at the city hall and the tax office about what you should do.

danwalmsley,
if you leave the country and have a postal address in Scotland, you can call the Belastingdients and let them know your address abroad. You can then call the Belastingdiesnt from abroad and update your situation. Same with the Council and insurance companies.
However you don't need to do the uitschrijving if you are planning to come back in less than 6 months. In doubt consult your nearest Juridisch Loket, they're quite good.

From a different perspective, you need to be incredibly careful here. Tax years run different periods in the two countries. UK is April-March, and NL is Jan-Dec. You have to prove you were in 'the country you pay income tax to' for a certain length of time. The UK is 186 days = pay tax there, if I recall.
6 months might leave them both wanting their pound of flesh. Depending on 'where' you wish to pay tax, think carefully, or even better, see a tax specialist.
