Default Taxes in the Netherlands

I'm an independent IT consultant. I have been offered a contract job in the Netherlands. I'm a EU citizen, but live in the US, working for my own company. In the US, I get paid on an hourly basis into the company and can deduct expenses etc.

Several people have told me that if I get a contract in the Netherlands, I have to pay taxes there, even if I work for my own US based company. Of course, I'll get the tax credit in the US if paying taxes there, but I'm wondering if I really do need to pay taxes in the Netherlands, especially for short-term contract (3-6 months).

As far as I know: YES, you have to pay taxes in the Netherlands. Dutch law says that if you earn money here (I'm dutch...) you pay taxes here. I know that even foreign athletes who win prize money here have to pay taxes on that......

Edit: I found this link for you: http://www.belastingdienst.nl/buitenland_uk/ (it's in english)

Anyone know how the US tax credit is computed for NL income? I've been trying to make some sense of the NL / US Tax Treaty, and it seems to only be intended for tax attorneys to interpret.

Is it ever possible for a US citizen to pay zero US tax for a year worked in the Netherlands? I'd like to get an idea for how much tax relief is offered by these treaties with the US.

Nope - I knew many Americans who had to hire accountants to sort out their taxes for them when they lived in the Netherlands.

Your best bet is to consult someone like Deloitte-Touche (who have offices in the Hague & Amsterdam as well as the US) who can give you specific advice.
