Bike hire
Is it possible to hire a bike for six months, or would I have to purchase one and re sell it?

It might be better to buy a second hand bike. If you're lucky, you might be able to resell it when you don't need it any longer. However, beware that you don't buy a stolen bicycle.

You can usually get them for under Eur100 (try joining facebook groups for Amsterdam buy/sell as departing expats usually sell them even cheaper) and you will get your money back when you leave - assuming it's not been stolen in that time 
There are lots of shops which rent out bikes, but you might end up paying more in that way.

I bought a bike for 25 guilders from the Police clear out of all the bikes they had "found" (shows you how long ago it was); still have it.
