A return flight won't make any difference if your intention is to remain in the UK. A much better idea would have been to renew your passport even if it meant delaying your flight by a week or two.

I'll apply for new passport while I'm over there as I will be staying after I've come back to sort a few things out, I can use his address, I'll be there long term, things just got bad fast and I need some time away

Wouldn't the Canadian passport state British as the nationality?

The Canadian passport would state 'Canadian' as the nationality.

So Im back, I did buy a return tickent but didnt use it, no issues at airport, I registered to vote within days of arriving, took me 6 weeks to get a bank account set up, man that was a hard one, now ahve 2 credit builder cards and did get a job, full time, after 9 weeks, took way longer than expected, waiting on drivers license arriving any day as I had a name and address change and not the correct paperwork!....then Ill apply for passport renewal.

Glad I came back, its not been an easy few months and Im drained, not helped by sticky divorce and other issues but hey Im happier than Ive been in years

A question. If one is a dual national, leaving US on US passport, but buying a one way ticket, has anyone done that and experienced problems ? My understanding is any US citizen entering or leaving US must do that on a US passport.

We did this earlier this year and had no problems. We entered on our UK passport. I would think that entering the UK on a US passport with only a one way ticket is where questions might be asked as to why, and that would be by UK border control, not the airline on which you are traveling. We also entered the UK from the US in 2011 on a 1 way ticket. When we come over to stay for 5 or 6 months we don't usually book our return trip until closer to the time we are ready to go back.
