In the process of working on an expat mortgage (Im resident in US trying to buy in UK), they are requesting either a bank or credit card statement showing a UK address in my name. I have family that live there so I at least have an address I can use.

Is trying to get a credit card going to be the same problem as opening a bank account (ie Impossible)?

Does anyone know or have experience of getting a UK credit card while resident elsewhere?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a UK bank account tied to a family address. With that bank account came Visa/debt card. The bank offered my a straight visa only CC. I make deposits to that account then draw money out just to keep the transactions going

You could also look at a Llyods offshore bank account in say the Isle of Man that will come with a card of some sort

Then there is the HSBC muti-currency account which [I think] you can have an account stateside as well as one in the UK, using a relatives address. My sister in OZ when she was in the UK a few years ago for an extended holiday, set up an account with HSBC & today the account is still active

Take from that what you will.

HSBC Premier service was able to get me a UK-based bank account and credit card but I had to tie it to my current address in Hong Kong. Not sure if I could have used a UK address (they said I could have used my office but didn't pursue).
