UK Car Insurance
Hi folks. First class forum. Wish I had found it before now.
A bit of background. Been living in Thailand for 11 years, married to a Thai Teacher for past 7 years, have one British son aged 4. Wife's application for family settlement now in Sheffield. Pension income and property letting income used to meet £18600. My son and I travel next week and a nearly new motor awaits us bought on my behalf.
I have been hammered by UK car insurers in excess of £1000 premium because of no proven no claims and Mrs K as a named driver only 3 yrs driving experience and will be on an international licence for the first year on arrival. She is 35 yrs old, no accidents ever! I am 55 yo, no accidents since a small bump in 1999.
I have an exemplary driving record 11 years Thailand and each of my Annual Certificate of Insurance on a Landcruiser 3l V8 turbo Shows a full 50% discount on full premium for past 7 yrs. This is the maximum achievable in Thailand. I have had it translated to English - it reads Discount for no claims and gives the 50% and 0% against penalties, loading, endorsements etc.
Can anyone help? I did try a quote for just me as a driver and inserted 70% no claims and the premium came to £300 for a £14000 family estate 1.6l
Advice much appreciated. I am paying monthly so can easily cancel current policy if I can get a better deal elsewhere.

Re: UK Car Insurance
your best bet is to find a broker. He should be able to search out the best rate for you rather than using comparison sites or going direct. TBH £1000 is not bad for a "new" driver with no UK acceptable no claims AND a non EU named other driver. I know folks going to US have problems finding insurance companies that will accept UK no claims and £1000 a year is considered very reasonable! One of the problems is that most countries insure the vehicle, but UK insures the driver, so different criteria come into play. As I say, find a broker. Just an example, the last car I had before leaving UK I bought new for £16,000 and my final years insurance - at 69 - was £300 approx with 65% NCD. Coming here I brought letter from my insurance co stating my no claims etc but no one was interested "we insure the car sir , not the driver". My insurance is based on the age of the car and it's type. Mind you fully comp is costing me £130 (approx)!

Re: UK Car Insurance
After being away from the UK for over 30 years, NFU accepted my claims experience from my Canadian insurer and driving record from the Alberta government. They also accepted me driving on a Cdn licence until such times as I had to transfer it to a UK licence. Might be worth a try.
